With Trump Gone, Biden Admin Stares Down Lingering Prospect Of MAGA Insurgency | Talking Points Memo

During his inaugural address, President Biden alluded to a mammoth, intractable task now facing the country: confronting a nascent, violent, far-right insurgency that coalesced behind Trump and the belief that he was the rightful winner of the 2020 election.

If Trump’s social media ban stays in effect, it will likely be the biggest factor in disrupting the MAGATs.

I just don’t know if it will stick.

They have guns.
We have guns.
If a order is given shoot to kill, many MAGAs will crawl back into their hole.

MAGA as in McConnell And his Group of Assholes.

Until and unless the never-ending whiners on the right start acting like members of a participatory democracy, they are to be treated for what they are.

We can’t have one freaking day to take this in and celebrate?

Pathetic.

There’s a possible change in this though…the QAnon people expected Trump to be inaugurated today, and now that he wasn’t they are in serious disarray. How that shakes out is still to be seen, but it’s possible at least some of them now feel they were duped and will naturally start to come back to a fact-based world (even if it’s on the conservative side). If Trump is muted, as his shambling last two weeks appears to have done, then there may be an opening for facts to come into it…and, if the Biden administration is able to have early successes in getting people money and vaccines that may help.

We’re still going to be stuck with the hard core assholes, but they have been around since Obama was elected and are mostly afraid to act out. When they do, they will probably find a different response from law enforcement…the Capitol invasion changed the game and they aren’t going to like that.

Yeah, if Trump’s mouthpiece is severely curtailed, it will have a limiting effect on the continuing damage he can inflict. But I’m not convinced that the GOP will continue to have a tie-in with the extremists sans Trump. They mentioned on the live blog that the Proud Boys are already turning on Trump and the GOP because they are “failures.”

Trump riled them up, but his pathetic exit from the WH is exposing what a paper tiger he really is and I think it will push a lot of the more organized extremist groups to behead themselves (metaphorically) by turning on Trump as well. If he were able to continue goading them and promising to lead them, they might stay on board, but if his access (via social media) is still limited and his interest wanes (likely in any circumstance, given his nature), I think they are going to find themselves rudderless out in the doldrums with no sailing knowledge to get themselves back to a place with solid footing.

Yes–for those who feared that his emphasis on “unity” meant “closing the door” on the immediate past, he allayed those apprehensions: he is demanding unity AGAINST the MAGA retrograde anti-democratic forces.

“There’s this stereotype that these people are all rubes and rednecks; these are people from all socioeconomic backgrounds that drank the kool aid: they believe the election was stolen.”

I’m gonna call bullshit right there. Most of them don’t believe for a minute the election was stolen.

They know better. They just refuse to admit their team blew it.

They’re like White Sox fans who know the runner was tagged out at home – who saw the instant replay over and over and over – but still argue he was safe. It’s ego and tribalism, pure and simple.

If you approach them with the idea they’re reachable – that facts and arguments can persuade them – then you’ve misdiagnosed the problem. It’s not “misunderstanding” or “economic anxiety” or “alienation”.

It’s selfishness (coupled with racism) and the need to win at any cost.

Trumpers determined to strike in the US.

I doubt it. Not with FoxNews and right-wing ragemedia in full swing. They have little to gain by doing so.

The same way most of them pretend to believe in the sanctity of life.

Though that can be impacted by how much money FoxNews and the like can garner from Cash 4 Gold scammers and catheter manufacturers, if mainstream industry sources could be convinced to boycott the nonsense.

QAnon- lied to. He made you look like fools. Everybody is laughing, Trump included.

Proud Boys- under the bus. Would you check the brakes while you are there? they feel a little spongy.

Who else? I bet you could create a meme for all of them that they have been sold in some way by Trump.

It is a PR problem in large part. Need to sell something that touches them.

They thought they were this close to having control forever and now know they won’t. It’s a hard truth they can’t accept.

A new AG and Justice Dept with a division focused on this will help make these cry babies think twice about breaking the law. Arrests for Jan 6 will go on for months. They have to be shaking now. lol

Yes x 100.
When Trump won in 2016, it was hard to accept, but left-leaning women [and men] held huge peaceful marches in DC and elsewhere on 1/21/17. Number of arrests-zeeeee-ro.
The right, when confronted with Trump’s loss, staged a violent insurrection. The arrests continue to mount.

The problem only becomes more vexing with the fact that it’s intertwined with a major national figure — now-former president Trump — and one of the country’s two major political parties.

Just lock them all up… including the national figure and the members of the one major political party.
