With SAVE Act Stalled in Senate, Red States Carry Water for Trump’s Non-Citizen Voting Myth

Taking a cue from the Trump administration amid its ongoing efforts to suppress the vote and perpetuate the myth of non-citizen voting, red state lawmakers are introducing restrictive proof of citizenship bills in their state legislatures.  Experts tell TPM it is no coincidence that these various state-level bills have advanced just as the Trump administration…

Suppressing the non-Republican vote is the goal.

Here’s hoping that, like so many other Repub initiatives, it blows up in their faces.

“…experts expect Republican voters to be disproportionately impacted by these proof of citizenship bills, per a 2025 report from Secure Democracy USA. According to Secure Democracy USA’s research, the states that Trump easily won in 2024 have the largest percentage of voters without valid U.S. passports.”

Not surprised. The way things have moved since 2016, (and the advent of Trump), is that the propensity of Democratic voters is to be better educated and, dare I say it, more informed and more adult. They have plenty of time to get their ID and they are more motivated to make their vote count.

The propensity of GOP voters since Trump is to be less informed, more moronic and more immature in behavior. They will be less prepared and more outraged by the requirements of a very strict ID requirement.

These stricter ID requirements will blow up in the GOP’s face and they will deserve it.
