Wisconsin High Court Tosses Out Governor’s Stay-Home Order | Talking Points Memo

MADISON, Wis. (AP) — The Wisconsin Supreme Court struck down Gov. Tony Evers’ coronavirus stay-at-home order Wednesday, ruling that his administration overstepped its authority when it extended it for another month without consulting legislators.

There’s a point at which the only viable reaction is “Knock yourselves out”. Let them endure the consequences of their actions. Stupid is as stupid does.

So, we can look forward to Wisconsin’s Republican Supreme Court and representatives hurrying back to in person meetings and hearings, no?
Or, just perhaps, this is yet another example of, ‘One rule for thee, another for me.’
It is, after all, the one principal everyone in the party agrees on.

Killing for power. Not a great look. But at least we know what we’re up against.

These guys are used to having their handi-work hidden. They ok suppression of the vote, take away rights, it does not get noticed and they run as “conservative, pro-life, not activist judges”.

I think they have no idea the approbation that is going to fall on them if the death/infection rate in WI rises. They now own that. 110% own it. When your granny, wife/husband/child, uncle, cousin, friend, co-workers does of Covid-19, you have someone to blame. And not a defuse blame, but actual easy to pin on 4 judges (one just rejected by the voters).

This is highly unlikely to end well for the three remaining judges.

The problem is the virus is not cooperative enough to limit infections to people who wanted this.

So.

It was a close, partisan vote that would’ve been different had the new justice been seated. The counties here in WI are already starting to issue their own orders.

Be aware that this is a ploy by the GOP speaker who wants to be governor next term. He is behind not only this effort, but the effort to force the in-person vote for the Spring primary. If/When this goes completely wrong ('round about Memorial Day, conveniently), this will all be his doing. There’s a new FB page that started last night that’s supporting Evers and people are plenty mad about this. We have to remember that this is entirely on Vos (the Speaker) for what happens next.

And before everyone starts talking about stupid cheeseheads, remember, we all didn’t vote for these people currently in play. But we will be voting against them in November. There are 19,000 members of this page so far. There will be more and the coordinated effort will be good.

So give us a chance before beating up on us. This will get better and the appropriate people will pay the price.

In the meantime, this was Evers’ statement last night:

Up to now, we were in a pretty good place in our battle against #COVID19. We had reached almost all our gating criteria. We had opened up small businesses across the state, putting folks back to work, and that was because of the good work of Wisconsinites across our state.

From keeping our kids home from school to staying safer at home, we cannot let today’s Supreme Court ruling undo all the work we have done and all the sacrifices Wisconsinites have made over these past few months.

Our ability to respond quickly has saved lives and now, despite that good work and the efforts of Wisconsinites, Republican legislators have convinced 4 members of the Supreme Court to throw Wisconsin into chaos, putting public health and lives at serious risk.

Folks, deadly viruses don’t wait for politicians and bureaucrats to settle their differences or promulgate rules. This virus has killed more than 400 of our family members, friends, and neighbors and thousands more across our state are sick.

And just because the Supreme Court says it’s okay to open, doesn’t mean that science does. We need everyone to continue doing their part to keep our families, our neighbors and our communities safe by continuing to stay safer at home, practice social distancing, and limit travel.

I am disappointed in this decision, but our top priority has been and will remain doing what we can and what we have to do to protect the health and safety of our state. After months of unproductive posturing, I hope the folks in the Legislature are ready to do the same.

After all, as the Federalist society has been trying to tell us, “mere life” is not more important than sticking it to a Democratic governor.

Two Americans were debating politics and the correct response to COVID. The Democrat says to the Republican, "What about the “social compact”? The Republican, looking puzzled, says, "I don’t have one…do you have one in your purse that I can see?

Even though Scott Walker is no longer Governor, he and Scott Fitzgerald and Robin Vos remain ‘the axis of evil’ in Wisconsin. They caused wreckage in the state, Fitzgerald and Vos continue to cause wreckage.

Great reaction and great post on your part.

Thanks a Bunch.

And with Vos trying a run at the governorship next time, he’s going to find it a whole lot harder, having initiated these two efforts.

Listen, I know all about living in a swing state where the GOP has greater power than its numbers would make you think because they’re corrupt and power-mad. We’ve started to turn that around and so have you. Just keep up the good work. I’ve often told people here that for god’s sake you can’t write off an entire state with many good people in it just because of the actions of a state government that has a slender GOP majority or maybe just a heavily gerrymandered minority running things. They do what they do precisely because their positions aren’t popular.

The best movements start with the stupidest actions. And here we are. I suspect the WI GOP is going to see some significant losses at the State level in November. People are plenty mad about this, in the face of the bars opening last night with shoulder to shoulder patrons.

So the whiners and whingers got their bars, beaches and barbers. Let’s see if they also get the virus - check back with us in two weeks.

I for one greatly look forward to elbow to asshole crowds enjoying a great restaurant meal served by wait staff in full protective gear. The transition to hospital food will be easier too.
