So.
It was a close, partisan vote that would’ve been different had the new justice been seated. The counties here in WI are already starting to issue their own orders.
Be aware that this is a ploy by the GOP speaker who wants to be governor next term. He is behind not only this effort, but the effort to force the in-person vote for the Spring primary. If/When this goes completely wrong ('round about Memorial Day, conveniently), this will all be his doing. There’s a new FB page that started last night that’s supporting Evers and people are plenty mad about this. We have to remember that this is entirely on Vos (the Speaker) for what happens next.
And before everyone starts talking about stupid cheeseheads, remember, we all didn’t vote for these people currently in play. But we will be voting against them in November. There are 19,000 members of this page so far. There will be more and the coordinated effort will be good.
So give us a chance before beating up on us. This will get better and the appropriate people will pay the price.
In the meantime, this was Evers’ statement last night:
Up to now, we were in a pretty good place in our battle against #COVID19. We had reached almost all our gating criteria. We had opened up small businesses across the state, putting folks back to work, and that was because of the good work of Wisconsinites across our state.
From keeping our kids home from school to staying safer at home, we cannot let today’s Supreme Court ruling undo all the work we have done and all the sacrifices Wisconsinites have made over these past few months.
Our ability to respond quickly has saved lives and now, despite that good work and the efforts of Wisconsinites, Republican legislators have convinced 4 members of the Supreme Court to throw Wisconsin into chaos, putting public health and lives at serious risk.
Folks, deadly viruses don’t wait for politicians and bureaucrats to settle their differences or promulgate rules. This virus has killed more than 400 of our family members, friends, and neighbors and thousands more across our state are sick.
And just because the Supreme Court says it’s okay to open, doesn’t mean that science does. We need everyone to continue doing their part to keep our families, our neighbors and our communities safe by continuing to stay safer at home, practice social distancing, and limit travel.
I am disappointed in this decision, but our top priority has been and will remain doing what we can and what we have to do to protect the health and safety of our state. After months of unproductive posturing, I hope the folks in the Legislature are ready to do the same.
