Well, gosh, that’s timely of him. It’s not like they had any notice of the pandemic or anything

He had requested the (republican) legislature to act a few days ago, they only lately refused.

Another reminder that sanders needs to go ahead and concede.

Evers said:

“[A]bsent legislative or court action, I cannot in good conscience stand by and do nothing,” Evers said. “The bottom line is that I have an obligation to keep people safe, and that’s why I signed this executive order today.”

And republicans looked confused and whined, “Conscience? What is conscience? We want to vote tomorrow!”

I know he’s having to deal with Republicans, but there’s still a D after his name and this looks bad. They at least have to make it loud and clear that this is the R’s fault.

Republicans were pushing to keep the polls open and have been fighting this every step of the way.

-The Legislature’s top two Republicans, Assembly Speaker Robin Vos of Rochester and Senate Majority Leader Scott Fitzgerald of Juneau, called Evers’ action unconstitutional that would be undone.
“The clerks of this state should stand ready to proceed with the election. The governor’s executive order is clearly an unconstitutional overreach," they said in a joint statement. -https://www.jsonline.com/story/news/politics/elections/2020/04/06/tony-evers-issues-order-shutting-down-tuesdays-election/2954626001/

Yep - he called the predominantly GOP legislature into emergency session on Saturday to ask them to do the right thing.

They went into session for exactly 15 seconds and adjourned without taking any action other than opening the session.

So the legislature failed to do their jobs, of course. Evers was left with no choice, for the safety of his citizens (whether or not they like him).

He pulled this one at the last minute in order to make it a fait accompli, that there won’t be a reasonable chance for the Rs to take him to court and block it.

I don’t think so. The republicans passed the buck to him, and he decided it stopped on his desk.

No, actually, it doesn’t. It might have looked bad under any other circumstances, but he’s got a bunch of sick people in his State.

This was the right thing to do, absent action from a recalcitrant legislature.

I agree it had to be stopped.

Evers is a terrible person. The worst person in the history of mankind. Terrible, terrible, terrible. Someone should sue his ass off.

How’s come?

He actually doesn’t have the power to postpone the election. ONLY the legislature can do that and they absolutely refuse because they can’t risk their guy not staying on the WI Supreme Court.

Just waiting on Puerto Rico.

Actually doing it at the last minute may be the only reason it sticks. According to Wisconsin law, he can’t actually do this.

I live in Wisconsin and hope it is delayed. I’m voting regardless but a friend of mine turns 75 tomorrow and wasn’t sure if he was going to chance it.

Edit: On the other hand, if a Republican did something illegal/unconstitutional I’d be pissed, so I’m a bit torn.

MADISON- Speaker Robin Vos (R-Rochester) and Senate Majority Leader Scott Fitzgerald (R-Juneau) released the following statement:

“We are immediately challenging this executive order in the Wisconsin State Supreme Court.

“The clerks of this state should stand ready to proceed with the election. The governor’s executive order is clearly an unconstitutional overreach.

“This is another last minute flip-flop from the governor on the April 7th election. The governor himself has repeatedly acknowledged he can’t move the election. Just last week a federal judge said he did not have the power to cancel the election and Governor Evers doesn’t either. Governor Evers can’t unilaterally run the state.”

ETA: Sadly, those losers can’t either. Unless it’s to run it into the ground. So much for “stay home, stay safe”

The power to move the election no longer resides w the governor because the legislature and Walker took that power away after Evers was elected. It should be and it had been w the governor. Meanwhile, the republicans recognize that the cities will be most affected. It’s clear, at least to me, that they are looking to eliminate voters who might not vote for Republicans. Or, to put it differently, and again in my view, they are murderers.

My ballot went in a week or so ago. They can’t stop the paper ballot from being cast. Doesn’t matter when they count mine.

And I sure as hell didn’t vote for the GOP candidate for SC. His opposition got mine.
