As recently as Wednesday, White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows said that he’s “extremely doubtful” the head negotiators will be able to broker a COVID-19 relief package if a deal isn’t hammered out by Friday.
“We’re very far apart,” House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) said afterward. “It’s most unfortunate.”
Most unfortunate is that 160,000 Americans are dead, 4,900,000 infected and the economy is burned beyond recognition. Republicans can’t even get their heads out of their asses for five minutes to understand the gravity of the situation and get a deal done.
They will walk away. Until it personally affects them, they don’t care.
If this was World War Two, the Republican position would be “Lets build as few planes and ships as we need, we don’t want to risk doing to much and be too successful.”
Can TPM please not just quote those assh*les with no bookending explaining how thoroughly dishonest they are?
The Democrats have the positions most beneficial to the American People. For the GOP to have any kind of edge would be attributable to propaganda, messaging and abject stupidity.

Pelosi and Schumer are in a jam. If Trump issues Executive Orders sparing the unemployed from penury, along with a stall on evictions. it swats away the most public sturm und drang about this situation, the States be damned. They’ve claimed it’s likely illegal, but what are they going to do, sue him to stop relief to the unemployed, renters and homeowners? If they stand aside Trump has taken the worst of Covid’s economic ravages off the table for awhile, maybe through the election depending on the length of his orders. And the GOP in Congress will lose all motivation to produce a more comprehensive relief bill.
I believe elected Republicans are signalling that they expect Trump to lose so they are going to inflict as much damage to the economy as they can inorder to make Biden’s task in restoring the economy that much harder.
Remember the Republican billionaires got theirs in the first round. The states and regular people are the folks being hurt. Nancy was right yesterday. The Republicans don’t give a shit about anybody who isn’t a financial supporter. They just don’t care about regular Americans or the real future of the main street economy.
A lot of GOP Reps and Senators in close races might have something to say about that.

I guess we’ll have to see what the orders look like, but the one on payroll taxes is meaningless, and it’s not clear trump has any authority over proceedings in state and local courts. So when a landlord files to evict someone, the tenant is going to have to bring this issue up and win on it, or not?
