Will National Dems Target DeSantis in 2022 … Or No? | Talking Points Memo

With the Florida governor’s race more than a year away, Thursday brought an early sign that national Democrats may be feeling skittish about their prospects of unseating incumbent Gov. Ron DeSantis (R).

The very model for political nihilism.

What’s wrong with Democrats. Fight on every front. The GOP certainly didn’t give up on Virginia. Sometimes I get sick of my own Party. What a bunch of losers. We pay consultants millions to tell us to give up - Fuck Them.

My bet is they will give money to the traitors Gothheimer, Golden, Manchin and Sinema.

Take a look at the polls. DeSantis is extremely popular. And the candidates attempting to unseat him … much less so. They have a better shot at the Senate seat. Not a GOOD shot mind you, but a much better chance than of defeating DeSantis. His poll numbers dipped during the worst days of the delta variant, but they now have the lowest cases of COVID in the nation:

The national media has had it out for the guy ever since he defeated Andrew Gillum, who was supposed to be their next AOC. They don’t realize that every time they write nonsense like this:

It only makes him more popular among conservative voters, and in a state filled with retirees, evangelicals and refugees from failed socialism experiments like Cuba and Venezuela, conservative voters are a majority in that state. Not every state has an electorate like California. At some point the Democrats need to acknowledge that.

Nikki Fried is an excellent candidate who has already won statewide election.

How could Florida have the lowest COVID rate? Is it cooking the books or did it kill a large portion of the population?

Even if DeSantis isn’t defeated in 2022 a smart candidate like Nikki Fried can damage him and highlight for the national media his record on COVID, voting rights and undermining the rights of university professors.

Both.

Will National Dems Target DeSantis in 2022 … Or No?

If not, then perhaps COVID-19 will.

She’s a boat load better that Crist. That guy lost to Scott…which at the time was unthinkable. He’s uninspiring, a party switcher and good at losing.

Yes, but polls show her trailing DeSantis badly. All DeSantis has to do is run TV commercials that were excerpts of her bizarrely choosing to repeat the outright untruths that the national media spent a year trying to push on DeSantis - things that Florida voters knew were untrue and even other prominent Democrats like the mayor of Tampa debunked - and she will be sunk. Had Fried done like the mayor of Tampa and stated “yeah I am a big fan of 60 Minutes but you guys got this one wrong” it would have gone a lot better for her.

Also - and I mentioned this yesterday - the opinion of the national media with respect to DeSantis and the opinion of Florida voters are completely different. The national media is 99% Democrat (or further left). No need to debate this … it has been proven by self-reported opinion polls time and time again. So there is nothing that DeSantis could do to make them say “He did a good job.” But Florida voters see things entirely differently. They LIKE the fact that Florida had similar numbers on COVID-19 infections and deaths to most states - and BETTER than New Jersey, New York, and California - while letting kids stay in school and generally keeping the economy going. His showing that it was possible was a huge reason Democrats in Virginia - who shut everything down - took a beating Tuesday.

And for the people who say “the GOP has no agenda” … DeSantis has enacted a ton of policies that are very popular with Florida voters. If you are a Republican or an independent - again the clear majority of that electorate - you have little reason to oppose DeSantis and every reason to support him. Of course, an online magazine ran by an alum of “The Nation” who believes that The Squad is too conservative is unlikely to see and acknowledge this objective reality.

Florida opinion polls say otherwise. She is very unpopular for taking the national media line against DeSantis during a crisis despite knowing full well that what the national media was saying about Florida wasn’t true. She wouldn’t even get re-elected to her own office at this point.

You are half-right.

Covid is strongly seasonal. Florida got hit over the summer, when the crazy hot weather made everybody get together indoors. Moderate temperatures are much less conducive to viral spread, as people are able to gather together outdoors. Florida case rates will start spiking again with the holidays, at which point DeSantis will again stop claiming credit and go back to straight-up pro-virus policyfailing.

And what was untrue about it?

You mean his record on preserving personal freedoms against the COVID dictators, stopping Dems from stealing elections , and owning liberal colleges?

He’s going to run on those issues

Your constant fellation of DeSantis bores me.

ETA: Wait, it occurs to me that you might actually be his troll wife.

My use of their language was meant to highlight how they frame those issues, not how I feel about them

There is a reason you are not rated on this forum. You are wrong. Florida has had dismal Covid numbers. My elderly parents, both Very Conservative Republicans Hate DeSantis, as do most of their Conservative Republican friends and neighbors.
