“He thinks he has a political problem but not a policy problem,” Michael Negron, a senior fellow at the Center for American Progress who studies affordability, told TPM. “And so you can see that in the policy ideas, because either they’re often not attacking the central problem or they’re small or complicated and not really going to do much for people.”
As a political problem, it’s all about a sales pitch, the terrain the folks around this White House are most comfortable on.
Helping most people out with policy doesn’t seem to be their forte.
In fact, tariffs are a regressive tax increase that Donnie enthusiastically seeks to impose by fiat. In and of itself, it is emblemmatic of his concerns about affordability.
Tariffs increase his power and are disproportionately paid by people poorer than himself.
To address this inequity, he disingenuouly crows about their benefits and lies about who pays them. That is, he treats them as a ‘political problem’ that he can redress with a scammer’s pitch.
