Originally published at: Why The Religious Beliefs Of Trump Defense Pick Pete Hegseth Matter - TPM – Talking Points Memo
This article is part of TPM Cafe, TPM’s home for opinion and news analysis. It was originally published at The Conversation. The most serious allegations against Pete Hegseth, Donald Trump’s pick to head the U.S. Department of Defense, involve mismanagement, heavy drinking, infidelity, sexual harassment and even rape. Hegseth denies the allegations but also claims that because…
Bright side, he’s going to get along swimmingly with Mike Johnson, so there’s that.
And all these separate churches and beliefs are rooted in the Confederate Churches that told the children of the South that God loved slavery so much they could kill their uncle if he disagreed.
There is so much bullshit in the air I can barely breathe.
I’m sorry but these freaks do not follow the teachings of Christ at all. Pretending they are conservative old school is just another way they are trying to rewrite Christianity AND the Constitution. You would ‘think’ lying would be up there in things they can’t tolerate. I was just watching Trump taking credit for everything Biden accomplished as if there wasn’t a four year gap between Donnie’s failures and Joe’s successes.
Shocking that the author made it to the end without using the term “American Taliban”.
The salient point left out of this article is that Hegseth is Trump’s pick to be Secretary of Defense, where he would be pushing against every measure that has been taken in recent decades to make the armed forces inclusive (including gays and women) and not just the province of Southern authoritarian fundamentalists. If he were to be confirmed by the Senate, he might eventually burn out in frustration at the task of turning the entire institution backward again. Doubtless there would be some really outrageous attempts to impose now unlawful restrictions on who can be in the military and what their role might be.
None of this means anything now.
He is a Trump Christian so all his sins and laws broken are forgiven.
Now he will preach against what he did for fun.
Too much is being made of his religion. Religious beliefs often seem extreme or problematic when explained by someone outside the faith. The fact is all people negotiate with their faith, doctrines, and sacred texts. People often separate their personal beliefs from their public duties and should not have those beliefs held against them unless there is some evidence of impropriety in their performance of their job.
Hegseth should be judged solely on his qualifications and experience that make him the best person to lead the Defence Department, and his performance in those roles should be used to judge how he will perform… Wait… He’s just a b list news personality… He did what with an axe… Sigh… We’re doomed…
…with a bent towards Christofascism, and following the worst instincts of Christian Reconstructionism*.
Like if the Patriarch Kirill and Yosemite Sam had a love child, and handed him the keys to the US Military, what could possibly go wrong? This could make The Crusades look like the Sunday afternoon church BBQ, and that worked out well…
These people shouldn’t be allowed near air pistols, much less nukes.

In no way is weekend TV talking head Hegseth qualified to lead the Defense Dept. He has said we should kill all Muslims, and has used ‘civil war’ language to describe how his Christian Nationalist ends may need to be accomplished in the U.S…
It’s pathetic that given all this, his nomination success appears to ride on how assaulty he has been, and how many women will agree to publicly testify against him, risking their safety at the hands of MAGA wrath. Those incidents are by no means minor, but they are not nearly as important to his job performance as are his other disqualifying and dangerous factors.
There is something so terribly wrong when I have to agree his assaulting women is the more minor issue. It’s going to be a rough 4 years.
Maybe Mikey can add him to the porno app (errr, “porno monitoring app” - yeah, let’s go with that…) he and his son share? Could be quite the bondage (errr, I mean “bonding”) experience, non?
Indeed!
ChristianTaliban invading the military. Let’s also recall Hegseth has the insider threat tattooed on his bicep in old English lettering like the Romans used.
I fear we will not know the America we live in, in 4 years. Given the blueprint to dismantle the government, P2025, I think the destruction of American democracy is going to be swift. The capitalists & oligarchs are gleeful standing in the wings waiting to walk on to worldwide stage.
What happens to women is going to be revolting.
Not one bit. I was curious about what is taught in Christian economics.
It’s not the religious beliefs so much as them wanting to impose their beliefs on the rest of us. I’ve found most religious zealots & extremists to be weak-minded individuals unable to navigate diversity of thought thus their need to have only a singular way to think. Life is too complex for them to differentiate values & ideas and women are the most complex thinkers thus the need to subjugate & dominate them physically & mentally.
Well see the test of our modern beliefs in the response. Glad every step will be videotaped. BLM was a response to all the footage of things they’d been telling us about for a hundred years.
These messianic shitbag Christ pimps cannot stand the cold truth of day. They live in a nutcase dream with a pot of Fed gold at the end of it.
