It sounds as if Eisenberg is in way over his head. His biggest concern is stopping leaks, and in focusing on that he is willing to ignore the substance of what he’s hiding. Covering up criminal and traitorous acts (such as using foreign policy to advance your personal goals) because you don’t want the “wrong” people to hear things, misses the point - and misses his obligations as a lawyer by a mile. There’s no privilege, by the way, if your communications or actions are in furtherance of the commission of a crime.

Say Trump is impeached. And assume the Senate fails to convict him. It will be portrayed by Republicans as vindication, as proof no crimes were committed. Yet there will still be a trail of underlings and hangers-on that probably committed actual crimes, in furtherance of the schemes the Senate lets Trump off the hook for.
There is going to be a lot of pressure on prosecutors and others in law enforcement, the intelligence communities and Congress to just let everyone slide if the capo at the head of the crime family walks. Do they all chase down every lead, file their charges, and prosecute to the fullest extent of the law, all the while Trump is out on the campaign trail celebrating his (alleged) innocence?

It goes both ways. It’s difficult to view Trump fans as “real” most of the time. If facts were bullets you could unleash a hail of them into a crowd of Trump supporters to no discernible effect. How do you perceive someone as part of the real world when their disconnect from that world is so pronounced?

Eisenberg reportedly ordered the transfer of the White House’s record of Trump’s Zelensky call to a code-word protected system usually reserved for the most sensitive of operations.
Only it was a “perfect” call, in which absolutely nothing untoward happened. Hey, we have a “transcript” that proves (???) there was nothing special, and certainly not a quid pro quo of any kind, certainly not that, heavens forfend.
So um, excuse me counsellor, but could you explain what the record of such a perfect, innocent, completely reasonable, everybody does it kind of call is doing getting shoved into the super-duper-secret file system reserved for active intelligence operations and the like? Cuz it’s a bit hard to reconcile those two things.

Because it contains a few snippets that might be leaked out of context to embarrass the president. From the description of his paranoia and desire not to know things he shouldn’t, it’s just barely possible he hadn’t read the readout before consigning it to oblivion, just heard other people’s descriptions. That might let him avoid prison, but I don’t know if it would keep his law license.

Mattis got in some good zingers at Trump while speaking at the Al Smith dinner last night, but I liked that he said this even more:
The second, he said, paraphrasing Lincoln, “was corrosion from within – the rot, the viciousness, the lassitude, the ignorance.”
“Anarchy is one potential consequence of all this. The other is the rise of an ambitious leader, unfettered by conscience, or precedent or decency, who would make himself supreme,” he said.
