A south Florida bodybuilder with a “pugilistic” Twitter presence secured a contract last year to spearhead a campaign by Hungary as the central European nation sought to ingratiate itself with the MAGA right.
“Hungarian is a notoriously difficult language that very few speak,” Reaboi told The Atlantic in May 2017…
“That’s why a lot of the translations of statements made by Sebastian Gorka and other Hungarian ultra-nationalists usually come across as racist and anti-Semitic, when, in fact, they’re actually quite innocent.”
I can’t get past that chyron to care about the story. Sort of a pet peeve of mine as I live in San Jose, CA. I’ve always thought that Silicone Valley was down north of L.A…you know, where the “Valley Girls” come from.
“In another time, he would just be the leader of a country that nobody cares about,” she added. “Now, important media figures from the big U.S. are coming to find out how he does what he does.”
As one who grew up with Hungarians who migrated to the Us in about 1900 and the next two generations, I’ll vouch for the language being tough and unusual. But it is truly full of a plethora of expressions and words that outpace other languages in their color, flavor and obscenity. And for immigrants treated in the usual manner, that is, like shit, you’d think there wouldn’t be so many of them who were/are racists, bigots, and in your face haters of democracy.
What a good interview though. Good work. Seems like fascism is on the rise all over the world including the US. We are again being boiled slowly in the usual soup humans make when under population stress and massive inequality. I guess the question is, can we get out of this spasm? It’s a battle royale one way or the other as we are seeing in this accelerating democracy wreck and our struggles against authoritarianism.
