Democrats should be anti-status quo here as well. (As Kate has said often since the election, it feels like Dems are forced into a position of defending institutions they don’t actually like or that don’t benefit them.) H-1B as it currently stands forces international employees into pseudo-indentured servitude status with their employers. If they quit or try to negotiate for better conditions and get sacked, they’re on a timer to come up with a new sponsor. People who are smart and motivated enough to get here should be supported and welcomed, not squeezed for profit.

There is a really good nonfiction book called Eve: How the Female Body Drove 200 Million Years of Human Evolution
by Cat Bohannon (Amazon.com: Cat Bohannon: books, biography, latest update) (Author)
That was a real eye opener for me. In the section on the evolution of the uterus, she addressed the small, but not rare, number of variations of the sexes that occur. And it is not “feelings”. It is children who discover during puberty that they have organs of both sexes, or not all the expected organs of just one, and chromosome varieties.
You might want to read up on it before brushing it off.
Sex, like all human traits, exists on a spectrum and while it is largely bipolar, there is a small population in the middle. We should be kind to them.

The problem with that idea, is that both Americans and skilled immigrants on visas are about to be thrown out of the lower-level coding and middle management tech jobs they have now, by AI replacing them. Software coding and management is the easiest first application for it. It’s already happening.
Musk knows this, he just needs more LLM trainers in the short term until his Grok AI system can replace most of his coders. Same for Meta, Amazon, Microsoft and the rest. Nobody should be looking at a tech industry job in the next few years unless they’re going into “prompt engineering” or a related AI field.

Musk complained that the number of “super talented” and “super motivated” engineers in the U.S. is “far too low.”
Yeah, we’ve seen what Elon considers “highly motivated” by the demands he makes of his workers: lots of overtime (unpaid, of course), and don’t you dare criticize the top brass. The more imported engineers to drive down wages and keep the balance of power in the job market tilted against the workers, the better.
The occasional round of industrywide layoffs helps, too. Lots of tech talent sloshing around in the applicant pool right now, and the hiring managers have some pretty wacky expectations as a result. Had one place recently offer me a temporary, W2-just-like-full-time-but-contracting gig, expected to be in the office, no benefits, base salary about half of what I was making pre-layoff. Then they said there’d been an “error” in the inital posting and it would actually pay LESS than half.
I told them “no thanks” in far more polite terms than they deserved.

There certainly are! Do some research into androgen insensitivity syndrome (AIS) . Individuals that are XY but are physiologically female. Complete mutation to nonfunction of the testesterone receptor.
Now imagine a spectrum of dysfunction of the receptor. We don’t know nearly enough about what makes sex and gender.

I teach at a tech school.
Grad programs would cease to exist without International students.
American talent goes to business schools – the cult of capitalism.
We simply don’t cultivate our own. I see very few Black and Hispanic (undergrad) students in my STEM courses.
Easier to cull the cream from foreign countries than fund our own.
Where DO we put our public funds?
What do we actually value?

The clash is inevitable Trump promised everything to everybody and many are not only going to be disappointed but will feel deceived and double-crossed. Trump doesn’t need the nativist votes anymore, besides who are they going to vote for? Dems? On the other hand the Tech Oligarchs do have something that Trump wants, lots of money, and they will change sides if Trump does not deliver.
