White Supremacists Deliver Themselves To Cops In A U-Haul

A lot of things happened. Here are some of the things. This is TPM’s Morning Memo.

On Saturday, police in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho arrested 31 members of the white supremacist Patriot Front who were crammed in the back of a U-Haul truck like racist sardines on the way to allegedly disrupt a Pride event downtown. They’ve been charged with conspiracy to riot.

Senators Reach Bipartisan Deal On Meh Gun Reform

Quick summary of what it includes

  1. Nothing useful to anyone other than the GOP congress person trying to convince independents to vote for them by saying they were in favor of Gun reform.

Quick summary of what it DOES NOT include:

  1. Anything that the majority of people nation wide really want, like bans on assault weapons and high capacity magazines.

No worries… depending on how you want to look at it, it either gets better, or worse…

lol, good one Christina.

They didn’t have a chance, the police could smell them a mile away.

An apparent leader of the group helpfully carried with him a seven-page blueprint of their plan laid out in full detail . . .

Well, that’s helpful!

Are there laws concerning crossing state lines to commit riot related crimes?

I do agree with you that there’s a whole lot missing from this bill that most people would like to see. That said, though, Shannon Watts of Moms Demand would like a word with you on one of the provisions, at least:

The provision about straw purchasers is also a good thing to see.

One of many fine aspects of the “little boys in big UHaul” story is that pic of a white person wearing a shirt saying “reclaim” America. Guess his history books are missing the first few chapters.

Unfair timezone advantage (my excuse is that it is 7 pm in Bangkok and I was cooking dinner).

Despite this bill being just a small step in the right direction, a lot of rightwingers are freaking out over it and are outraged at the possibility that enough Republicans might vote for it to become law.

Here’s to hoping that this meh bill can cause enough outrage and demoralization among Republicans that they refuse to turn out in November.

Perhaps under federal hate crime laws? I don’t know what, if anything, those laws have to say about intent, though.

I found myself wondering why these guys went to Coeur d’Alene, of all places, to do this when there are plenty of Price events in bigger towns where they could have made a bigger splash. I guess they thought they might find a friendlier reception in Idaho. I am glad that they seem not to have learned the rule that one should never assume.

OMG it really was. The door goes up and they’re all crammed in there in their little outfits, hands up because a big cop has a gun on them. Their day was really, really going downhill from that point. Like the Russian dudes in the elevator.

Agreed that it’s a “camel’s nose under the tent” kind of bill. My hope is that we see it for what it is and at the same time not be dismissive of a couple of the very-good provisions in it.

Trump gets a two-fer here, as he appears to give Mo Brooks the boot for disloyalty and will certainly take credit for Katie Britt’s expected run-off win next week in the Alabama GOP Senate nomination, which Britt would almost certainly have won handily anyway.

Sure, it seems to omit most of the important stuff–but having an expanded background check for under 21, instituting more Red Flag laws, actual mental health help, in addition to new rules on trafficking and licensing gun dealers–it’s not nothing and maybe it’s a start.

On a whole range of issues Democrats have held out for sweeping packages–Immigration, Voting Rights, Guns–and gotten nothing but what ever they could sneak into Budget bills. This is a baby step but it will probably prevent some deaths.
