The path is set for President Biden to do what he must. The GOP has now been fitted with the far right extremism tag they served up on a silver platter. Biden is a master at setting up the move well in advance and having the opponent hang themselves.

Sure. If it helps with context. In March Biden sent to Congress (when I use “Congress” I mean both chambers) a budget. It detailed increases in taxes for the ultra wealthy and big corporations among other things and the result was a dramatic lowering of the annual deficit. I do not have the specific numbers in my head however. This is the budget that would begin in September. It is separate from the debit ceiling fiasco. The debit ceiling law was created in 1917nand has gone thru several revisions. Now it’s purpose is to be used as a cudgel with which to pound the opposing party. It’s an annual dance of stupidity. During the trump term it was passed three times without even a peep. Now we have a democrat in office. The goobers want to see if default will be as bad as many say and hopes are to pin it on Biden. Janet Yellen has already juggled what is possible to keep obligations paid. That ends around June 1 because tax receipts were vastly less from the business sector than expected. There are 3 or 4 days left where the House and Senate are in session before June 1. Kev McCarthy has said today that a vote in the House would take 4 days, and the Senate 7 days. Neither side seems to understand the gravity of the impending damage we are looking at. So while I have zero respect for the fuck ups on the republican side I also have less respect for the democrats as no one seems to have their shit together. Four days in the House set aside for blather. Seven in the Senate. Why not vote so the economy does not crash?
This should not ever happen in America. I pay my bills on time … in fact I have two I will mail today. The Congress should do likewise, or they must be considered dead beats. Every country will see us as miserly dead beats. Not good for a wealthy nation. I hope this screed clarifies how I feel.

I imagine Kevin McCarthy’s response will be to let the Ethics Committee handle this while he counts on Gosar’s vote. And we all know how speedy the Ethics Committee is. Especially as their docket is piling up with Republican liars and racists.

I think the dems have been pretty clear about the consequences of a default. Where I think they’ve failed is in continuing the kabuki. They really should have come out a long time ago and said, “We don’t recognize Congress’ authority to limit debt incurred by previous sessions of Congress and we’ll keep paying the bills according to the budget bills passed by congress and signed into law by the President.”

Every other adult you meet in your daily life is someone you wouldn’t want in your home or near your children due to their odious beliefs and allegiances. Dems are in denial when they proclaim the number of rabid racists, xenophobes, misogynists, homophobes and anti-Semites are a small sliver of the populace. In aggregate they’re half of us. Half the people have one or more of the above traits.

Factual dystopian assessments are troubling. Many people living within a mile of you think blacks should go back to Africa, Jews control the banks and media, gays are the devil’s spawn and school teachers get their degrees so they can have enhanced access to small children in order to groom them for careers in the sex slave trade or pornography. Uncomfortable truths, but these are many of your neighbors and co-workers.
I’m not immersed in media assessment of our society, clearly you are, and here’s the result. You feel obliged to share it and bring us all down to your level of fear and disenchantment and hopelessness.

Media assessment? These are views shared by noted sociologists, psychologists, professionals tasked with keeping tabs on who we are. You discount when prominent Generals testify before Congress that the military has an alarming problem with white supremacists within their ranks? Is it the media making up reports about a half a dozen police departments in small, rural towns being disbanded every year and their duties farmed out to county authorities, all because it’s revealed almost the entire force are essentially a bunch of racist Nazis? The media reports, they don’t make it up or cause the problem. You think if every newspaper and television station in the country folded the problem would diminish or disappear?

A dystopian view for sure, but I can’t say the facts are wrong. As for the cure, there will be no cure unless people get off their asses and vote, demonstrate, and hold their elected officials to account.
The mainstream media just can’t deal with this Nazi business, and yes, they ARE into bothsiderism and relativizing everything. Hence CNN handing a mic to Trump and Leslie Stahl slobbering all over MTG.

This piece is an archetype of paint-by-the-numbers establishment political wonkery apparently intended to distract the reader from the main issues:
- The January 6th coup attempt (which is never mentioned);
- No GOP candidate ever opens his mouth except to make a bad-faith argument;
- The GOP base is head trauma-level crazy;
- Throughout the red states, there is an all-out assault on democracy and individual rights;
- The GOP is responsible for the stochastic incitement of right-wing terrorism.
