This article is part of TPM Cafe, TPM’s home for opinion and news analysis. It was originally published at The Conversation. In her role as former chief executive of World Wrestling Entertainment, Linda McMahon oversaw an enterprise that popularized the “takedown” for millions of wrestling fans. But as President-elect Donald Trump’s nominee for secretary of education, the…
Well, here’s hoping the Republican’s, and Trump’s in particular, incompetence in governing will minimize the damage they do.
This reminds me of a cartoon from the mid-eighties - I can’t find it now – but the gist is “what will we become if we shut down public libraries?” to which the other person replies “…conservative Republicans…”
The full 2025 agenda for the federal role in education would be a catastrophe for low-income students and students with disabilities. And that is likely just a start if the adverse consequences, as their ultimate goal is to end the federal role in education and ultimately destroy public education. I’ve worked at ED for 45 years and am trying to get my retirement papers processed before these maniacs arrive. In the end, I don’t think they’ll accomplish their agenda, but I’m sure they will succeed in making the dedicated civil servants I work with miserable.
No need to dismantle Dept of ED.
Check the number of dumb fucks who voted for Trump.
Cant wait to see their little pius heads explode when Satanic Church schools also get federal funding.
I see no need for the Education Department. From 2001’s No Child Left Behind, which was replaced by 2015’s Every Student Succeeds Act, both of which I see as “No Child Gets Ahead” boondoggles. The DOE has never educated one child.
Education is a state and local issue. Period! Nowhere in the Constitution is the Federal Government given the right to meddle in education, in fact the 10th Amendment prohibits it.
Transfer the programs to other Departments, and half the employees, and when there’s nothing left, close the doors, with a hearty good riddance!
Bless your heart.
a “universal school choice” – plan, likely funded through federal tax credits.
Unless the tax credits are refundable, which is highly unlikely, they will only benefit high income earners who want to send their kids to private segregation academies and religious indoctrination centers.
So get rid of the GI Bill and its successors? Repeal the Morrill Act of 1862?
Yes, 1862. During the Civil War the Congress of the United States was meddling in education.
Exactly. To which the GOP says “Why shouldn’t the rich get richer? One day, I will be one of them! After I win my sports bets!”
I suspect over time the Republicans will be able to convince enough Democrats to agree to cutting some programs to save others. As a parent to a child with a disability I am clear eyed about what to expect. IDEA funding increases will go back to their abysmal levels from years past. Vouchers have bipartisan support so they won’t be a problem getting approved. They will decimate public schools, leaving our most vulnerable children in failing schools with no services. It is bleak.
It would mean the blue states could keep more of their money and the red states would be up sh*t creek, so I say bring it on.
Cause and effect. Congress was funding those woke schools in the North, filled them full of DEI and critical race theory, and look what happened. The War of Northern Aggression canceled the rich, cultural heritage of the South.
Keep kids dumber and dumber?
Move any worthwhile programs to other Departments. The GI Bill would go to the VA, where it should have been! Move half the employees handling it, and can the rest. How hard is that?
Reading the article is such a good thing. If you halve the employees after you have transferred the programs, that effectively hobbles the programs. So you’re saying you want education for the rich, the able, and the wealthy, but not others. To which I say, good for you! Now go back to X.
ETA: I know that wasn’t your post Tigershark, I am just agreeing with your reply to the original post.
A well known previous administration in a major European country had a money saving solution to the children with disability problem. The one Trump likes to praise.
The DOE is one of the only reasons schools have programs for neurodivergent and other mentally struggling students. What are teachers and parents supposed to do if DOE is removed and schools lose their funding for teaching those students?
