In recent months, due to some combination of unexpected Democratic legislative success, a somewhat rosier economic outlook, abominable Republican candidate recruitment and fallout from the Supreme Court’s overturning of abortion rights, Democrats’ congressional prospects have brightened.
If the House flips, we will be treated to Jim Jordan yelling, interrupting witnesses, shameless abuse of a retired Anthony Fauci, Merrick Garland and others, and Hunter Biden every day. The House will propose legislation that bans abortion and some forms of contraception, punitive laws aimed at suppressing the vote but labeled as vote integrity. None of this will go anywhere in the Senate and McCarthy is not a shoe-in for Speaker.
“Political trifectas are historically short-lived, and the Democrats’ may well be coming to an end.”
This is very true. However, we’re also in a historical moment in which the right to body autonomy has been taken away from over half of Americans. Nothing like that has ever happened here before. Meanwhile, we’ve got a former president who led an insurrection and is currently under investigation by a number of grand juries. Again, we’re in uncharted waters. Dems may well defy history because there is no historical precedent for the moment we’re in.
Keep in mind that congressional subpoenae can be blown off if the united states district attorney for the district of columbia decides not to enforce them. There is precedent for this (Eric Holder blowing off a nakedly political subpoena of the fast and furious program).
I think the Republicans’ plans for all these investigations is a huge risk for them in two ways: if they have investigations and if they do not have investigations.
If they try to have a serious investigation of say, Fauci, do they really want to do that? Do they want to have it brought out about Jared siphoning off ppe? Do they want to have ingesting bleach and a light bulb up your ass brought up again? Withholding of tests from blue states? They don’t have a friendly CDC leadership and DoJ to help them out anymore. Any witness from the science or medical communities will rip them a new one. And if they try to make it a circus, by, say, excluding Democrats or just having Laura Loomer testify, it will be obvious to even the NYT that it’s a clown show.
And if they don’t have investigations, the maggots will go nuts, pr rather, more nuts. The maggots will make even the Republicans’ lives hell.
This is a case where I think they would be better off not catching the car, so they don’t have the problem they have with the car they caught in the Dobbs decision. If they don’t win the House, they can still scream about Hunter Biden’s laptop and Paul Pelosi’s DUI and introduce articles of impeachment weekly, but never have to face amy tough choices or responses.
Their best outcome would be to have the House split 228 D to 217 R.
Republicans re-wrote their playbook, and Americans ain’t too keen on the GOP’s plan for our future. Most folk seem to want to keep our progress as a nation moving forward, not backward.
I keep hoping, without much evidence to back it up, that a party that offers no popular policies and trades in nothing but ginned-up culture war nonsense and wild lies generally can’t really grow and progress in the long term, that eventually people will find it more off-putting than anything. But I’m not sure. You’d also think that the worst gossip in the office would eventually be shunned but that doesn’t really happen much, since there are enough nasty, small-minded jerks around who enjoy that sort of thing.
“If I had done what he did, I would’ve been in jail, 100%. No questions asked.”
Yet, that malevolent mother fucker still walks. It’s astonishing really that the AG of the United States has let this go on so so long in spite of what we already know and that’s likely just the tip of the ice berg. And I don’t want to hear about the air tight case bull shit and how Garland is busy crossing all his t’s and dotting his i’s. I think a lot of people are over it at this point and resigned to the reality that some people really are above the law and the POTUS (current and former) is in reality like a monarch that is held to different standards than the rest of us.
Well, we’re not them, but certainly any place can drift away from the ideal of liberal democracy, which takes more effort and sacrifice to make work than some people are willing to put in.
Absofuckinglutely. Add Hillary’s emails to Hunter’s laptop 24/7. Old desk bound Garland enthroned on his donut cushion will still be pushing papers around on his desk trying to look busy. The Tangerine Tyrant needs to be indicted before the midterm elections. Doing so, in my view, will actually, help Democrats politically. And I don’t want to hear how the DOJ is above politics. Bull shit. Everything is political.
