What’s Left Of The ‘Mainstream’ Republican Party Is Looking Around And Getting Nervous

The ascendancy of Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA), and Republicans’ lack of willpower to punish her, speaks volumes about where the party still is even after President Donald Trump’s defeat.

They are nervous as hell …but they are still not quite filled with enough remorse to take genuine corrective action.

The conspiratorial vein that Greene represents — she is really a renaissance woman when it comes to conspiracies, dabbling in everything from 9/11 doubt to COVID-19 denialism to QAnon…

For my money, she harkens back more to the Age of Endarkenment.

And no where to be seen or heard is Donald Trump himself, the laziest coward of them all…and yet ALL of the GOP is so weirdly afraid of him that there isn’t a single one who is willing to stand up either against him or stand up and claim his base as their own. Being a Republican is a national embarrassment.

"I do think as a party we have to figure out what we stand for,” Sen. John Thune (R-SD), Senate Minority Whip, told reporters this week.

Oh, John…

All those years in Senate leadership as McConnell’s little lackey – packing the courts, gutting civil rights, and shanking healthcare – you showed us exactly what you stand for.

Senator Thune: “I think we’ve got to be the party… of ideas and policies and principles, and get away from members dabbling in conspiracy theories.”

Actually, Republican “ideas and policies and principles,” like supply-side economics, and opposing the “gay agenda,” are pretty much conspiracy theories. The idea that there is a sane, principled rump of the Republican party is a sick joke.

And two, as Josh M points out, the problem with the Greenes of the Republican caucus isn’t that they “dabble in conspiracy theories.” It’s that they openly advocate the violent overthrow of the government.

Republicans are no longer, and haven’t been in quite some time, the Party of Lincoln. Truth be told, on the contrary, they are the party of Nathan Bedford and Jefferson Davis. Is there a dimes worth of difference between today’s Republican Party and the Confederacy of the 19th century?

It’s over for so-called establishment Republicans in the Republican Party. Their lies, hypocrisy, and unrequited thirst for power have come home to roost. I suggest they start a new Party, but this time, not repeat the mistakes that have brought this country to the breaking point.

Someone should really turn that into a beautifully styled and bronzed plaque for the wall in his office.

OT: Just saw a breaking report on my phone that Biden is saying Trump should not receive further classified briefings due to his erratic behavior.

ETA: Here’s a link.

That’s of course good news but I’m sure he pays about as much attention as he did while playing president: zero. At least he won’t be about to show them off to visitors like Mike Flynn.

But they aren’t ready to stop drinking…

…members dabbling in conspiracy theories.

I don’t think “dabbling” is the word you’re looking for, John. Might I suggest “wallowing?” Or perhaps “up to their whatzits?”

Remind me again how Sen. Thune voted on impeachment? Yeah, that’s what I thought. Shut the hell up and go cry in your beer, John.
