I am posting this because it seemed to be a really thoughtful essay by Timothy Snyder. It probably has been posted before, but may be deserves more visibility.
Just to add, he discusses the grifters JD Vance and Donald Trump, but his point would really apply to the Republican party as it is now run, although particular individuals perhaps notwithstanding (I am really not sure who those even would be).

The Trump administration must expunge the record to mask their illegal moves so it is in gaps that the fight for justice will be fiercest.
I suspect the gaps in the Epstein files will be a lot more than 100 pages.

I think the worst case scenario is that Halligan is withholding the findings of the inspector general’s investigation, which would make all the mortgage cases look like the result of Pulte’s poking around for allegations in the paperwork that was entrusted to him.
IANAL, but I gather Pulte wouldn’t want to endure the aftermath of that finding.
I’ll, also, guess it would also lend a lot of weight to the defendant’s allegations of selective and/or vindictive prosecution which could bring their cases to an ignominious end.
