White House chief medical adviser Dr. Anthony Fauci brushed off Sen. Ted Cruz’s (R-TX) demand for Attorney General Merrick Garland to prosecute the nation’s top infectious diseases expert amid GOP outrage over Fauci’s statements on COVID-19.
By the Brooklyn twang in his speech I recognize Dr. Fauci as a native of the same place that produced my father — who never quite lost his accent in spite of living for decades in the Midwest. But there is another thing about guys of that vintage from Brooklyn: They don’t scare easily and they always have a smart comeback — think “Lennie Briscoe” from “Law and Order”. Fauci is the real deal, both in character and in expertise, and poseurs like trump, Cruz, Hawley, Cotton etc. etc. will never come close to being a match for him.
Fauci seems to be enjoying telling the GQPers to piss off. He has definitely passed the age and time in his career where he feels he needs to put up with these assholes.
And if you damage science, you are doing something very detrimental to society long after I leave,
That, Dr. Fauci, is exactly what Cruz and the GOP are trying to do at every level. They want their followers to lose faith in all of our institutions, from science, to the economy, to government. That is the time honored tool of the authoritarian. When you can’t trust the foundations of society, it is easy to believe, and ultimately worship, the strongman that tells you “I alone can fix it”.
Cruz made it obvious long ago that he was a breathtakingly outrageous liar who would literally say damn near anything about anyone; he was lying that way back when the idea of a President Trump was nothing but literally a joke. Fauci is, for Sane America, pretty close to the other end of the continuum, a deeply trusted person whose many important accomplishments and obvious commitment to public health are not questioned. This kind of crap might work on people who also believe John-John is alive and about to become Trump’s veep, but the rest of us just roll our eyes at the man who’s still crying wolf for the 173rd time and pretending that anyone who isn’t a mouthbreather is listening.
And he’s a friggin’ national hero for his pioneering work on AIDS at a time when Asshole Americans (aka future Trump voters) were ignoring that epidemic – while simultaneously thanking the perverse god they created for “smiting” its dead and dying victims.
Yep, and they aren’t impressed with b.s., having heard plenty of it. That’s why New York always saw Trump coming and yawned him off. Most big cities are full of people who’ve done remarkable things. If you only say you have, folks are quite a bit less impressed. Gotta love it.
