What GOP Lawmakers Are Costing the US Economy to Avoid Funding Healthcare

Originally published at: Republicans Are Costing the Economy $15 Billion a Week to Avoid Funding Healthcare - TPM – Talking Points Memo

Trump administration officials have been parrotting a $15 billion-per-week figure to estimate how much the now 20-day government shutdown is costing the U.S. economy. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent bungled the numbers during a CNBC interview last Wednesday, touting it as an eye-popping $15 billion a day and sending headlines into a frenzy before the Treasury…

“This Republican shutdown is costing taxpayers billions of dollars.”

This message should be mass-blasted every day. Squeaker Johnson, please call the House back in to session. Your paycheck should demand that.

Republicans are willing to pour a little over $2 billion down the toilet every day to maintain the filibuster.

Squeaker Mike’s minions need more time in their home districts to lie to local news media and hide from citizens there.

It’s all a big game

Some Democratic messages they might try out:

  • Trump doesn’t care about your “shutdown” - he’s off playing golf on one of his innumerable estates, at YOUR expense, every day
  • Trump doesn’t care - he’s gallivanting around the world for photo ops he calls “deal making” and “peace making” – but no “deals” ever materialize and he hasn’t established “peace” anywhere, not even back in the USA.
  • The Republican House is enjoying its vacation too much to come back to DC, whiere they might have to WORK
  • Funny how Republicans have consistently refused to talk to Democrats when the government is open and running – but now that it’s shut down, somehow, they are “unable” to talk

The possibilities are endless.

It has been documented, more than once, that our healthcare system is woefully inefficient. The insurance profiteering and paperwork and the bloated financial bureaucracy are certainly to blame. The US cost per capita premium is probably over 150% compared to Japan or to Canada. Going to Medicare for All would likely pay for itself, since Medicare’s Insurance related overhead is 4% or less compared to 50% for private and employer-sponsored health insurance programs. Bernie Sanders was right - we should have gone to Medicare for All a long time ago.

I hope the next Democratic candidate campaigns on Medicare for All, an puts such a system in place by the end of their first term. The system would save money and would be a Godsend to most working Americans and American families.

To put a visual to the cost of the shutdown…
Guy with the fork jamming cash in his mouth= oligarchs ( rich folk or greedy GOP)
Guy with the nearly empty plate=rest of us

The generic term cost has no meaning when speaking about the fascist regime. The one basic fact that needs to be repeated, over and over, is that it’s not about what anything costs, it’s about taking stuff away from all but the favored. That’s the game: control to take away stuff.

If one Republican would switch their vote on the discharge petition to release the Epstein files, this would end. So, I’m all for calling it the Epstein shutdown.

I think the longer the shutdown goes on the longer we don’t get to the Epstein files. That alone is worth it to the billionaire pedophiles who used Epstein’s services.

If this impass in gov’t is over funding health care and not the Epstein files then the only conclusion I can draw is that the republicans hate all us non rich folk no matter your race or
religion. Ya hafta be a big donor or you are nothing.

“Republicans have shut down the government because they do not want Americans to have affordable health care”

America’s health care system is the epitome of waste, fraud and abuse.

How much did Trump pay for his COVID care?

I’d change that slightly to ‘taking stuff away and giving it to the wealthy donor class

So the shutdown is bad thing for the US economy yet this is the same administration that wants to remove USG spending from GDP because somehow government spending doesn’t count when measuring the economy?
