WH Takes Hard Line On Deadline For Unemployment Deal

White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows is framing a broadly agreed upon timeline for coming together on a COVID relief package as a hard cutoff.

When do Congresscritters stop getting paid for not doing their jobs?

Meadows has nothing to bargain with. The GOP can’t even get their own senators in line. This is a set up for some “Now look what you made me do” illegal actions by the WH. No deal is better than a really bad deal.

It’s funny they think they have leverage in this. The idiocy with this one is great.

They go on vacation, Speaker Pelosi should extract the green new deal out of them when they get back in September.

Even McConnell is pulling the rug out from under them with his, “We’ll see what happens after that.”

It’s sad, but not surprising, that the Republicans couldn’t even put together a plan in the 2+ months since the Democrats passed their plan through the House. It’s really clear what is needed, and the consequences if people don’t get support…we’re talking about millions of people losing their homes, without any way to get support, and state governments overwhelmed with all of the extra spending and decreased tax revenue. Sure, they can toss out some of the items, that’s part of negotiating legislation, but when the Republicans offer payroll tax cuts (which will not help people without a job) or tax breaks for the wealthy (!!!) compared to helping the poor get through the worst economic crisis in decades, it’s hard to see how the Republicans are taking this seriously.

It is very possible that we will not get a deal for a few weeks, with Republicans insisting that tax cuts for the wealthy are more important than unemployment aid gumming up the works. It’s what the Republicans want, they really think that the poor are getting too much aid and should be suffering, so it’s not really important to them except for the political optics. And, considering that they are going to run a base election, they may decide that punishing the poor (especially minorities) is a net plus, especially if it causes more death and rioting.

And he’s going to end the payroll tax by EO too. Yawn.

Trump threatening some kind of executive order to break the impasse is slapstick on a high level even by his remarkable standards.

All Repubs in Congress should have their pay stopped and their personal finances frozen and forced to live on unemployment for 6 months or longer.

Firstly…Kudos on the very fine example of how NOT to wear a mask by Markie Meadows.

Secondly…tRump has lost hims widdle baby rattle for the umpteenth time this week. Surely Ivanka has a line of designer baby pacifiers. Give daddy something to suck on would you please?

Pure Trump. God forbid you compromise, or help the opposing parties weigh what matters to them and what they’ll be flexible on, and slowly, painstakingly get the knot out of the sneaker laces. No, anything you do you do with bluster and threats. Things you can’t do that way aren’t worth doing.

The problem with negotiations at this point in time is the GOP is about a month behind on the rest of the country. When the bank loans stop getting paid by landlords that aren’t collecting rent, they’ll have their oh shit moment and be like why didn’t anyone warn us.

I suspect this is about the corporate immunity provisions. Republicans have never seen a disaster they didn’t try to exploit.

This is a repeat of a stand alone post, but it’s appropriate as a reply to yours.

Once again, Trump, his White House cronies, and the RethugliCON caucus prove themselves completely incapable of leading and governing.

VOTE Democratic on Nov. 3!

Senators should have some skin in the game, that way the deal would been done weeks ago.

If there’s no deal by Friday, then what? They’re just going to walk away from the table, leaving hundreds of millions of Americans high and dry, with an election less than 3 months away? Even Trump isn’t that stupid.
