That position should not be about personality. We ask for representation and by all accounts her condition seems to be deteriorating. This BS sentimentality is not only the reason why our current president still believes there is some bipartisanship left in the current GOP, it is also why we will blow yet another opportunity to shape the courts. It gives such RBG vibes. Ugh!! It is selfish of her to hold on.
The female Senators who have spoken out in support of Feinstein are not doing so because of the sisterhood.
Collins is just as big a snake as McConnell. Gillibrand is two clicks short of becoming Sinema.
Feinstein should have been kicked off the judiciary committee when the term began. This clusterfuck is on Schumer. That guy couldn’t see two steps ahead of you gave him a map and a flashlight.
Both show the so-called collegial decorum of the Senate as bullshit: they have known and worked with Feinstein for decades but in her decline show her no respect; her illness is just another lever for their party to pull.
They also telegraph that even a Feinstein resignation will not deter a Republican filibuster; they will not confirm her replacement.
ETA: confirm replacement on the committee; appointment of a replacement to the Senate is not contestable AFAIK.
But if they were TV lights he sees just fine. The guy would hold a press conference to discuss his fucking lunch if they let him.
“The supposed emergency is the Senate Democrats are unable to push through the small fraction of their nominees who are so extreme, so extreme and so unqualified, that they cannot win a single Republican vote in committee,” McConnell said on the Senate floor.
And why isn’t the Democratic response: Gorsuch, Kavanagh, ACB?
And all of the lower level judges rated as “Unqualified” by the ABA.
This is just the first step. Dems can’t jump right over the normal process, regardless how pro forma it may seem, and then complain mightily when the GOP doesn’t even try
I agree on Feinstein, but I was referring to Moscow Mich.
The fact that Feinstein isnt able to appear in DC long enough to make some committee votes is quite worrying. Senators spend only a tiny fraction of what us plebs consider “a full work week” in public view. Diligent senators do lots of work off-camera, but an ailing senator could spend all but a couple of 30 min stints a week recovering in their DC residence and leave their staff to make all the real decisions. I don’t think that’s fair to the American people, but it’s how the institution is set up.
The point of my comment was that Mich could be quite sick, but is able to keep up appearances, so will probably continue to hold a senate seat. That Feinstein can’t keep up appearances is indeed quite worrying.
Or some anti-abortion fanatic in a Texas shithole outlawing abortion for the entire fucking country, just like he was bought to do. Activist judges, anyone?
The problem for once is not the Republicans. Feinstein is not “slowing down”. Feinstein is in cognitive decline and should have resigned 2 years ago. Expecting the Republicans to “fix” this problem is the silliest expectation. Step down Senator.
Schumer might also have needed to show Feinstein’s team that there is no middle option-show up for votes (even if she can’t do any substantive work) or resign the seat
I actually think that was in fact the goal here. Or rather, a chess move in which that’s a potential next move once the opponent makes theirs
If the reports of increasing dementia are accurate, then she may not be refusing and clinging to power. It may just be an inability to comprehend the extent of the situation, and make an honest appraisal of her current health status.
Anyone who has dealt with someone developing dementia will know what I mean. People are naturally resistant to facing that diagnosis, even as their reality slowly dissolves around them. Pain medication for shingles isn’t going to help either.
So this may not be her fault for being intransigent, just a terrible situation for the Dems to have to deal with, one way or another.
What would that accomplish?
It wouldn’t change a single GQP vote.
Feinstein should resign. That will help Biden’s agenda more than anything else she could do.
I can’t blame Mitch on this one. Why should he and the GOP help out on this? I would want Democrats to behave the same way if the shoe was on the other foot.
Now if she can’t be there, Feinstein needs to do the right thing and retire effective immediately.
Who could have predicted? Shocking that Republicans gonna Republican.
“The American people reject that kind of scorched-earth behavior or approach to governing,” Jean-Pierre said.
A good 45% of them like it.
And Susie Collins: I’m concerned, maybe she has dementia? Or is she a lying asshole?
She’s suffering from RBG syndrome - stay long enough to fuck things up for everyone else.
I do believe that this is the first time I’ve ever agreed with anything you’ve posted
I wish the ghost of RBG would visit DF and offer some advice about the big mistake she made
Agree or disagree, at least we’re on the same side.
Why can’t Feinstein get on a private plane, fly to DC and be transported by ambulance to the Capitol so she can vote on these nominations to move the process forward. It would drive McConnell nuts and take the pressure off DiFi to resign. Robert Byrd used a similar action in 2009 when he had missed Senate votes for two months and was very ill a the time.
