WH Says It’s ‘Working The Phones’ Like Tanden As Chances Of Confirmation Dwindle | Talking Points Memo

This nomination died when Manchin pulled his support. Everything after that is a waste of time and Tanden should have withdrawn.

It’s not particularly “granting” as either the votes are there or they are not. Rather doubt working the phones is something that moves any requires Republican Senators (sans perhaps promises one would rather not make).

There’s a point where one doesn’t get any benefit from pouring more effort in.

I suppose there is a utility to show some stubbornness to not give the R Senators a sense they can easily take scalps. But time and effort are limited commodities.

If one is a President with absolutely no skill or power, then I agree.

Like Kavanaugh withdrew? Or Amy Covid Barret? Or Clarence Thomas withdrew?

Lyndon Johnson used to pick up recalcitrant Senators by their lapels to convince them otherwise. Anyone there over 6’'4"?

Let’s see, he’s come out against nuking the filibuster—the only way we could pass the John Lewis Voting Rights Act with a simple majority—made noises about the $15 minimum wage, come out against Tandeen…

Not passing the Voting Rights Act just might allow the republicans to steal the House in 2022.

Who’s side is he on again?

I’d love to agree with you but five days ago …

Unless I’ve been misinformed, the $15 minimum wage is part of the $1.9 Trillion American Rescue Plan that has passed out of committee in the House and will be ready for a vote this week.

Yes, but assault is prosecuted more vigorously these days!

In many cases.

And Manchin has announced that he thinks $15 is too high.

Murkowski should IMMEDIATELY become an “Independent” and caucus with the Democrats.

As an “Independent” she actually has a BETTER chance of getting re-elected due to the changes in the Alaskan Voting system.

It would make her a “darling” to the Democrats and allow her to be a “King-maker” in the Senate and wield real power for Alaskans.

P.S. Fuck Manchin that asshole.

If you read Josh’s column today you know what must be done. I and every other thinking Democrat have been saying this for years.

I tried to pick some juicy quotes but there are just too many. Read it if you haven’t.

For instance, why did Biden tellGovs. that the $15 minimum wage won’t fly.
Instead the airwaves should be blasted with quotes from Repubs. against. Even Manchin has plenty of constituents in WV who would be up in arms if he voted against it.

Is that where we really want to go? I’m moderately concerned that Tanden is the beginning of the slippery slope of lowered expectations. Seems unnecessary when we have better options (unlike the other side of the aisle).

In February 2021, as the nomination of Neera Tanden for OMB director faced opposition, Democrats in the Congressional Black Caucus began to advocate for Young to assume the top position

Not sure we’re keeping our eye on the ball with respect to race relations and diversity.

Why not force them to shoot down a less trouble-inducing woman of color?

If she were unqualified, or did something wrong, I would say she should withdraw. But she has done nothing wrong, unethical or illegal. She has not done anything nearly as bad as the Republicons subjected the country to in the last 5 years or so. She is a victim of rank hypocrisy and Dems are wrong to let Manchin and the Republicons get away with this.

Not the yardstick we should be using. Both-sides-ism is their playbook. Tanden’s tweets don’t line up with an unbiased and independent OMB. That job requires people who can work across the aisle.

Can she?

this is about math. Votes are all that matter. Not what we really really want or what we think is fair. Your own examples point to people who had the votes. Tandem does not.

Sen. Cornyn, who backed Trump, says Biden should pick OMB nominee who has ‘not promoted wild conspiracy theories and openly bashed’ opponents

Sen. John Cornyn (R-Tex.) said Tuesday that President Biden should withdraw his nomination of Neera Tanden as director of the Office of Management and Budget, arguing that the president should instead choose someone who has “not promoted wild conspiracy theories and openly bashed people on both sides of the aisle” with whom they disagree.

Cornyn’s remarks, made in a Senate floor speech Tuesday afternoon, prompted some Democrats to note that Cornyn was a vocal supporter of former president Donald Trump, who has promoted wild conspiracy theories and openly bashed those with whom he disagrees.

“Self awareness training was skipped by [the] GOP,” Joe Lockhart, President Bill Clinton’s press secretary, said in a tweet.

Ya think? In Cornyn’s defense, though, he’s quite stupid and self-awareness is not a GOP trait.
