WH Says It’s Not Sweating Over Manchin Promise To Preserve The Filibuster | Talking Points Memo

Manchin is posturing. Biden will cut a deal with him.

Manchin argued that the filibuster, a Senate procedure that requires 60 votes to pass legislation, is WAS “a critical tool to protecting that input and our democratic form of government.”

Fixed it for you Joe. It WAS a valuable tool to prevent complete annihilation of the minority WHEN there was a ‘loyal opposition’ party. Today as the GOP has proven since at least 2008 it is a tool to support annihilation of the Majority. I challenge Joe to show ONE Instance of where the filibuster has done anything good in the last 25 years or so.

Well, there was that time that the Dems managed to block MoscowMitch from installing a Supreme Court Justice right before an election. Oh, wait.

It’s true for almost every Democrat which is why there are only two holdouts. They need this to pass in order to stay alive politically. That’s why I believe H.R. 1 will eventually pass.

Latinas overwhelmingly voted for Biden. Sure, more voted for Trump this time than last time, same with Black voters, but he didn’t come close to winning the demographic.

This is exactly what Manchin wants, and Biden gets it.

This looks as if Manchin is maneuvering, rather than fully locked-in. Let’s wait and see. Biden is an exceptionally accomplished legislative tactician and very likely had a good idea in advance how this whole thing is likely to develop, and how he would manage it.

Give it time.

Well, the extra reconciliation bills should get the spending bills through at least. Let’s hope Manchin is only his ARP-level annoyance in that project. But the administration needs to get moving on it, not least because there are elderly D senators in states with R governors.
They’ll have to keep working Manchin on the voting rights front. But even with that, we need the party to get/keep working on plan b’s for every state. Abrams style organization and outreach from local leaders everywhere. Teach our voters how to get around the bullshit and vote.
Frankly, if we can enact the economic parts of Biden’s agenda through reconciliation, the party should remain popular enough to pick up seats in 2022, despite the attempts at suppression. If we can pick up 2+ seats on a favorable senate map, Manchin’s power evaporates overnight.

Manchin == teats on a boar

I was looking for a Republican who would work with me in good faith to reach a compromise. I know one exists. I know this because a soothsayer told me that I’ll need to clean him up a bit after a unicorn shits him out its ass.

That might work for the infrastructure bill, but not the voting right’s one. The WV SoS has already come out against the For the People Act:

Love the finesse that suggests there is a lot of backstory to Manchin’s editorial. The sausage making continues and Biden’s spokesperson is very professionally passing on that message.

This isn’t about what Joe knows. It’s about teaching his voters back in WV that the GOP wont meet him in the middle.

Hmm, has anyone checked to see if there is legislation to shore up WV voting procedures? You know just so the electorate can again believe in the integrity of the process.

Exactly…

His vote for Majority Leader is his most consequential vote.

Until he really screws us on important Legislation I will consider his preening problematic but not yet unworkable.

As he and Twoomey were in on some reasonable gun Legislation a while back. Manchin may be able to help corral Twoomey and a few other for some legislative movements on background checks.

Trump made gains. Gains aren’t Latinas going for Trump. He made gains with Black voters too. But we still voted against him overwhelmingly.

I saw that and thought it was very apt.

Is there a basis for this belief?

(Not saying you’re mistaken.)

Chopin! Really?

I would happy if my cat could get off the top of the damn door once he gets up there. Instead, he cries pitifully for help, has no exit plan, too afraid to step into my arms and requires a death defying (Mine) act of juggling him down while not bleeding out (My blood).

Actually it sounds like I am describing republicans as well. But then, they ain’t nowhere as cute as that damn furball.

I’m betting he wants to be reelected. Seems like a safe bet.
