Andy Slavitt, White House senior adviser on COVID-19 response, on Wednesday said that he expects that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s guidelines for those who are fully vaccinated will “absolutely loosen” in the coming weeks.
Vaccination greatly reduces the chance of getting the disease, but I don’t think it has been established that it means you cannot spread the virus. Mask wearing for all still seems the best course of action in public.
Time to vaccinate regardless of age.
and OT but thses people who worked for us …locals in Afghanistan and elsewhere need to be brought here.for their safety. Vetted, yes, but lets save lives
As far as my training tells me the vaccine will blunt symptoms after infection. Some will not show symptoms. The vaccine does not give you the virus. We must continue to wear masks until that line graph bottoms out and stays down. Those who don’t get vaccinated will make the pandemic continue.
My (current) understanding is the second Pfizer dose conveys 90% resistance to infection. Cartoonishly, 1 out of 10 fully-vaccinated people who are exposed to the virus will become infected. Further, that resistance is time limited. At this point, we only know that it lasts for six months at best (maybe more, but we can’t be sure).
As new variants continually emerge, that 90%-over-six-months immunity surely will drop.
Given the lack of vaccine around the world, the suicidal/homicidal refusal by approximately half of pink American men to get vaccinated, and the reckless behavior of Americans who refuse to mask and social distance, I’m guessing we’re a long, long way from being out of the woods…
Absolutely spot on… sad to say. We think we are a brilliant species but we are not. Some few are but most are barely above plants, And no disparaging of plants is meant.
This was from the March spring break super spreader event in Miami Beach this year
Humans are generally not too bright.
In some ways we are like cattle. We like being crammed next to each other. In herds. I for one am fine being alone with just Mrs darr.
“This is an American achievement — a powerful demonstration of unity and resolve, what unity will do for us, and a reminder of what we can accomplish when we pull together as one people to a common goal,” Biden said.
For those of you who have yet to come to terms with the past 4 years, let me translate:
" I, the greatest, smartest president in the history of the universe forever accomplished something that no one has ever done before, namely, liberate you from the tyrranny of a disease that doesn’t have the courtesy to kill only poor people. And although you could have gotten bleach much cheaper, I chose to give you this medicine I developed.
You are welcome."
Yeah, well, we’ve got a ways to go yet. After multiple screw-ups by the powers that be, I’ll get my first shot on Friday, then the wait and, presumably a second shot in 3 or 4 weeks. Just because appontments have been opened up to everyone over 16 doesn’t mean there are actually vaccines or appointments to be had. People are still waiting up to 8 weeks for an appointment here which means there are going to still be unprotected and partially protected folks for at least three more months. And that’s the folks that are anxiously awaiting their turn. Masks and distancing will be with us for a while longer.
They’ve already been around longer than humans. Actually concerning humans I am surprised we have survived as long as we have. Our family tree is replete with failed species that are no longer around. That homo sapiens is here is a real puzzler.
However, I also understand that being fully vaccinated confers an important benefit that you did not mention: It greatly reduces the risk of becoming seriously ill if you should contract COVID-19 despite being fully vaccinated. As I understand it, if a fully-vaccinated person contracts COVID-19, his chances of needing hospitalization are negligible.
I believe so. I read that Moderna has already announced work on a booster.
ETA: given the mRNA vaccines were “built” from info gleaned from the genetic sequencing of the virus soon after it began spreading, I imagine they’ll be doing similar with what has been learned about the variants. And hopefully learning even more from observing it evolve and adapt in real time at massive scale.
