A group of Republican senators unveiled their newest infrastructure counteroffer Thursday, a paltry proposal offering just just a tiny fraction of the new spending President Biden included in his plan.
Yes, Republicans you want to use a finite amount to of money that is left over from the Pandemic response, and yet even the projects you are willing to fund will need more than that. Construction and repairs always, Always, ALWAYS take more time, and cost more than the estimate.
Then too, they insisted that the legislation be paid for, but took almost all the viable methods of doing so off the table: no changes to the tax code post-former President Donald Trump’s 2017 tax cuts, and no deficit spending.
All they offered up to fulfill their own requirements is the previously appropriated COVID funds, and some vague gesturing in the direction of “taxing people who use the infrastructure.” At Thursday’s press briefing, Sen. Roy Blunt (R-MO) said that they are putting other payfors on the table too — and proceeded to mention only taxing electric vehicles.
They’re only concrete new revenue is a Tesla Tax. This is unserious to the point of insulting.
“I think what they have done to present the proposal they put out today was very, very good,” Manchin said. “This is a wonderful step in the right direction.”
In my household we call things like this Kindergarten Compliments. I get them all the time from my trainer at the gym.
“we are worried that major cuts in COVID relief funds could imperil pending aid to small businesses, restaurants and rural hospitals using this money to get back on their feet after the crush of the pandemic,””
Which is precisely the intended effect of the proposal.
The best that can be said for Manchin in this mess is that he’s playing himself like a cheap fiddle.
The reactionaries really don’t seem to be doing anything to get what they want from him.
["The progressive wing of the party, meanwhile, has seen enough.
Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) took to MSNBC to denounce the counteroffer as not ‘serious.’
‘They don’t have pay-fors for this, it’s not real,’ she said.
Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) has been twitchy for days, finger on the trigger of the reconciliation process.
Even Sen. Dick Durbin (D-IL), a close ally of Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) and usually more to the center than Warren and Sanders, was dismissive of the counteroffer.
‘It’s getting close to pulling-the-plug time,’ he told a Bloomberg reporter."]
The republican reply was, essentially, Lucy pulling away the football. There is a difference between a genuine negotiation and a sham, and we’re now seeing that difference.
Give them a quick reply, wait for them to show more bad faith, than force Manchin and Sinema to either fish or cut bait.
"“I think what they have done to present the proposal they put out today was very, very good,” Manchin said. “This is a wonderful step in the right direction.” "
Fucking christ. Someone in WV needs to organize WV Dems into telling Manchin that he’s not getting re-elected NO MATTER WHAT, so he might as well do what’s needed instead of playing this stupid fucking game.
