Wendy Davis Announces Bid To Challenge Rep. Chip Roy

Former Texas state Sen. Wendy Davis (D) has announced a bid against Rep. Chip Roy (R-TX) in a district that has quickly become much more purple, though still maintains a definite Republican lean.

Chip Roy.

If you have two first names you should stick to stocking shelves at Walmart. If your middle name is Wayne go with robbing banks.

If 2020 is a blue wave election, Davis can win, so why not run?

Roy has made his name by being a “right-wing firebrand.”

Not much in the way of a profession is it? Perhaps he should have considered dental hygeine.

May she plant a sneaker in his ass and send him the way of another deplorable Roy.

I was listening to the latest episode of Ezra Klein’s podcast (which I highly recommend) and Tim Alberta, the author of a new book on GOP politics was on. Alberta, a veteran reporter with limpeccable credentials, remarked how the level of intelligence in the current House members was incredibly low, particularly by historical standards. He said no one would believe how ill-informed and ill-prepared so many of them are. His little history on the “rise” of Mark Meadows was a great case in point.

It is good to see her back in politics. Running for governor was a bridge too far at that time, but this House seat looks to be in the Goldilocks zone for her.

That happened in my county after Trump was elected. There was a surge of Democrat women. And they all kicked ass in the following years. And Davis has charisma. You can’t buy it and man, it doesn’t hurt.

And she can deliver her message for hours on end without taking a break.

The enemy has dubbed her Abortion Barbie. That works where it works and not where it doesn’t.

Amusing and hopefully prescient post from the Texas Standard’s Facebook page:

Ed Scruggs A high profile race of polar opposites in a district so gerrymandered it’s like an episode of Stranger Things. The GOP over-reached when it created CD-21 and to densely populated, cosmopolitan Austin, Chip Roy is like a creature from the Upside Down. Something’s Got to Give.

Running even for a local office like magistrate is a ton of work. But she doesn’t strike me as the fragile type.

She has a trailer park toughness.

Yeah, rightly or wrongly, she is going to have to fight that battle on the campaign trail.

I don’t know the district, but I personally try to dissuade anybody running for office in my deep Red part of Florida from making either Choice or Guns a part of their platform. Its fighting a fight they want to have, on their territory. And republicans won’t let you bring up any other subject once you go there on either of those.

And, not surprisingly, what I have found through way too many discussions with republicans…activists and voters…is if you engage them on just about any other subject, they are helpless, and sometimes, even persuadable.

The district runs north of San Antonio to south Austin. Womenfolk are fired up down here.

This is my district. It will be fought in the suburbs (and mega churches) of Austin and San Antonio and the I-35 corridor. The rest of the district is exurban or rural Texas which will be Republican. Chip Roy is standard issue Tea Party ideologue who tries to be reasonably pleasant but lets the mask slip regularly. He loves the culture wars so Davis is the perfect foil. Especially on abortion. Not sure he even lives in the district. He didn’t earlier. Not sure Davis does either. One bit of hope. My SA city council district elected and reelected a fairly liberal democrat despite being primarily Republican. But then again, city council races tend to be somewhat non partisan.
