A lot of things happened. Here are some of the things. This is TPM’s Morning Memo. Sign up for the email version. An Essential Prism For Our Time Before jumping into the day’s news, I want to elevate another prism through which to examine the Trump II presidency: white Christian nationalism. By now I’m sure it’s obvious…
It’s really getting tiresome to read and hear pundits express any level of surprise when confronted with the reality Donald Trump is not subject to our nation’s laws. They may as well tell us water is wet, excitedly and with awe. Brazen? This is what he does. Sheesh.
Trump Administration ‘Unquestionably’ Violated Court Order
U.S. District Judge Brian Murphy of Boston spent most of the day trying to unwind the Trump administration’s South Sudan gambit, a brazen violation of his order imposing strict conditions on third country deportations
Lots to comment on when the zone gets flooded with reactionary revanchist shit but what continues to astonish is how much of it is based on fantasy, febrile myths forming the basis for policy debacles.
Trump Administration ‘Unquestionably’ Violated Court Order
For the love of all that’s holy, can we please find someone, ANYone, that will do something about this.?
And to the vote overnight about the new budget:
I have a colleague at the store whose son is autistic. He tried to harm himself and she told me was being released from the hospital this past Tuesday. He is a teenager. She knows she’s losing his coverage with this bill. She’s a single parent. I don’t know what she’s going to do.
And that’s along with all the variously disabled customers I wait on at the store. They’re all going to lose something in all of this, but I guarantee you, they will vote for any GQP that comes along and disparage their current representative, who is Democrat.
The nation is about to change drastically and not in a good way. After Medicare, the next on the chopping block will be Social Security. Mark my word.
Sad but true.
On the flip side, the young man in front of me bought my latte at the store yesterday. It was odd in a way because he never smiled. But I did. (Maybe he was feeling glum about everything, too.)
No.
That is all.
Well, it seemed so easy to write off Medicare and Medicaid, why not use the same strategy on Social Security? Piece of cake, right??
There’s a hidden provision in that big ugly bill that makes Trump king
“No court of the United States may use appropriated funds to enforce a contempt citation for failure to comply with an injunction or temporary restraining order if no security was given when the injunction or order was issued….”
Translated: No federal court may enforce a contempt citation.
Amazing what you can hide in a massive bill that you pass in the middle of the night.
Trump is refusing to amp up sanctions against Russia to pressure Putin into a war settlement. He is the first and only President where we can say a likely factor holding him back in ending a war is the pressure needed to bring it to an end would threaten his financial interests in one of the primary antagonist’s nation. More sanctions would tank Moscow Trump Tower.
"With the report noting that Trump had earlier told the same leaders that he was poised to issue sanctions against Russia to pressure Putin, the Journal reported he had a change of heart after his call with the Russian strongman, with the Journal’s Bojan Pancevski and Laurence Norman writing, "He wasn’t ready to do that. Instead, Trump said he wanted to proceed quickly with lower-level talks between Russia and Ukraine at the Vatican. "
If you thought right wingers were pathological, it’s literally true in the biomedical sense. In addition to being a drunk, a wife-beater, and a security risk, Peter Hegseth is a gross slob:
“Back in February 2019, when the pandemic was still far from most people thoughts, the Fox News programme Fox & Friends aired a segment in which contributor Pete Hegseth revealed he had not washed his hands in ten years.”
Just the guy you want in charge of the Pentagon’s biological warfare defense. Seriously, if you look at every single one of Trump’s appointees, the individual pathologies many vary, but none of them is fit for association in civilized society.
ADENDUM: I wonder if that was known at the time of Hegseth’s confirmation hearing? Given that Trump ordered the FBI not to supply the Senate with background profiles on confirmable appointees, and the fact that I have little confidence in Democratic oppo research, maybe not.
Republicans tend to vote like zombies anyway, so maybe it wouldn’t have helped, but it WAS a close vote. I would think the sheer ick! factor of Hegseth’s never washing his hands might be the ONE thing that could sink his candidacy, if anything could.
Fascism reflects the concentration of wealth because power in too few hands breeds kings.
If the South Sudan deportees are convicted criminals why aren’t they held in graybar hotels?
Here’s a free gifted link to the NYT article about how Garcia’s case was initially handled, and the DOJ lawyer who was fired for trying to do the right thing.
Handling of the Abrego Garcia Case: ‘Keep Him Where He Is’
A Maryland man’s deportation to El Salvador set off a fierce debate among officials in three cabinet agencies, despite agreement there had been a mistake.
Everyone seems to have completely normalized the fact that the President of the United States lives entirely in a fantasy world and brings that world into the government all the time. …I don’t remember ever seeing anybody in the media even comment on that.
Some do try. Only to be strongly advised by their superiors to knock it off.
All you little ladies should talk more about girly stuff.
Nice TV gig you all have there, it would be a shame if something happened to it.
The Daily Beast reported Wednesday that both ABC News president Almin Karamehmedovic and Disney CEO Bob Iger communicated to the hosts of “The View” that their political coverage should be toned down in favor of softer, more celebrity-focused segments. The Beast cited unnamed sources who confided that the hosts didn’t take kindly to the suggestion, with co-host Ana Navarro pointing out that a major sector of their audience watches them for political analysis.
The source emphasized that the request to talk less about the Trump administration was not an “edict” and that the hosts still had free rein to decide what topics to discuss for each episode. But the show’s on-air talent still reportedly bristled at the suggestion.
