A lot of things happened. Here are some of the things. This is TPM’s Morning Memo.
Republicans are super mad at Rep. Madison Cawthorn (R-NC) for talking about congressional orgies and coke “key bumps” and for being an all-around nuisance. And they’re not exactly making a secret of it.
A superPAC tied to Tillis has poured more than $300,000 into an anti-Cawthorn ad campaign that, among other things, painted the House Republican as an “attention-seeking embarrassment.”
Now if only the GQP in GA and CO could do the same against EmptyG and Boebert.
House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) had a conference-wide meeting with House Republicans on Wednesday to do some major damage control after his rebukes of certain far-right lawmakers in his Jan. 10 House GOP leadership call were published this week–and apparently he successfully pulled it off
He isn’t the Speaker yet, folks. Let’s not put the cart before the horse. But I’m guessing, even if the GQP takes the House next year, after this event, he has no chance to be SOTH.
Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) and Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) were reportedly the only Republicans who spoke out against the leaders during the meeting ,
These two will be among the replacement candidates for Speaker.
Gaetz kept his lips sealed after the meeting , telling Politico he wanted to “reflect on it further.”
This is your enforcer, people. This is why he was at EmptyG’s hearing on Friday. Everyone needs to toe his line - McQarthy isn’t in charge anymore.
# We Can All Agree That Cawthorn’s Become A GOP Oppo Campaign Target, Right?
The other thing we can likely agree on, is if Cawthorn runs again, and this oppo info is used by his Democratic opponent the opponent will be crucified.
Tennessee state House Speaker Cameron Sexton (R) proposed flat-out burning the library books that get removed
I know they get hopping mad when you accurately describe the things they do. But for Christ’s sake, guys, if you don’t want to be compared to Nazis, pro tip: Don’t do things the Nazis literally did. Read about what the Nazis did and then don’t do any of those things. I’m embarrassed for both of us having to say this but obviously I do.
OT: strange bedfellows: AOC & 2 other members of the so-called Squad…and Cawthorne & MTG…were among the 8 House members who voted late yesterday against a resolution that would have authorized the US to sell the seized assets of Putin’s cronies, and give the proceeds to Ukraine
All this fratricide doesn’t happen unless the congressional gop leadership has numbers. Said numbers would run against the conventional wisdom that R control in 2022 is a gimme.
Bureaucrats in DC shouldn’t be deciding what your children learn at school. My bill, #HR899, is only one sentence long: “The Department of Education shall terminate on December 31, 2022.”
I’d like to understand the squad’s objection to this. I know why the GQP did it - too close to their paychecks. But is the squad under similar conditions?
