We All Pay The Price For Kevin McCarthy’s Pathetic Weakness
I disagree it’s McCarthy’s “weakness” that is the problem. He has the power to avoid the shutdown. In fact he 100% has a bi-prtisan majority for passing the senate compromise.
We will instead be paying for his Selfishness.
He can have a funded government or his Gavel. He’s choosing Gavel.
I’m sorry for your loss. She was a beautiful cat and it sounds like she had quite the personality, too. This is the toughest part of having pets, but you know that already. My condolences.
Of course, I don’t understand McCarthys thinking, but . . .
Yes, he wants to be speaker more than anything else, and he wants to be speaker for the sake of being speaker, not to achieve specific policy goals. But it’s reached a state where everyone is laughing at him as a spineless POS. He has to know this, right? Continuing to be speaker only makes him a bigger fool.
Why not say, “fuck it, I got my chance to be speaker. I’m gonna let a bipartisan budget bill come to the floor, and those freedom caucus assholes can move to vacate. But I’ll look reasonable and they’ll be left trying to clean up their mess”
Led by the sartorialists Joe Manchin and Mitt Romey, the Senate attended to the urgent business of formalizing a dress code for itself, to which John Fetterman responded:
I’ve got a sawbuck that says this ends with a discharge petition to bring a relatively clean CR to the floor, and Hakeem Jeffries becomes the de facto Speaker of the House. Things are only going to get through via discharge petitions and we’ll end up with an omnibus budget bill. I’ve no idea when that is going to pass.
Well I get paid tomorrow. After that? This is going to be a very very long shutdown and when callers we deal with side with the Radical Republicans…well folks it’s gonna be a bleak Thanksgiving and Christmas…
David makes the sad-but-true point that “the Freedom Caucus sees shutting the government down as a ‘win’ no matter what concessions they make later.” I really wish journalists would drop the whole “we spoke to people at a diner in [Red State]” thing and go talk with people in line at food banks. I remember the pain of unpaid workers during the Trump shutdown of 2018-2019 (35 days, longest government shutdown in U.S. history). More people need to hear those stories.
I don’t know about their staffs, but shutdowns have never been across the board. My daughter who’s a “white collar” National Park Service employee will be laid off, but some law enforcement rangers who are considered “essential” may not be (people will die!!).
It’s a soft sort of shut down, but I say, if you’re gonna shut down, shut down everything! Let the morons fall off cliffs and drown. They knew the park was closed, let them get in trouble. /s
I believe, if Kurtz’s numbers are correct , the House is being held hostage by a handful of nutjobs. And Kevin, yes Kevin is the negotiator and the victim with the gun to his career.
I don’t fear the “impeachment inquiry”, unless of course these media hogs don’t want it televised. But they will want it televised, and we’ll see the various gangsters compete for TV time, but w/o substance. So just like the second Republican debate in MI.
Kevin was already a tool in the California assembly. When he assumed the portfolio of powerful Bill Thomas, all his benefactors cared about was his compliance. He would literally say whatever K-Street scripted for him. Now we’re realizing he’s a cipher? He will blithely sit by and watch the government crash because he only vaguely gets what real power is about. “Pathetic weakness” doesn’t even begin to describe it. And fuck Bakersfield.
