Wave Of Republican Defections Sweeps January 6 Commission Bill To The Senate

A minor Republican jailbreak Wednesday afternoon catapulted the January 6 commission bill to a landslide passage, delivering an embarrassing blow to House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA).

Time to begin pressuring Republican Senators to do the right thing. Wishful thinking but I want to have some hope that 10 or more still support our Constitution.

Well McCathy, I personally think your chances of ever becoming HOUSE SPEAKER has dropped dramatically!!!

McCathy experienced a 35 member defection! That says a lot! Hope folks are listening!!!

SO WHAT ARE YOU GOING TO DO SENATE??? (GOPers)

It is good to see that there are some cracks forming in the republican “wall”.

The fact is that Trump went too far into open opposition to the Constitution and many of the republicans know that full well, even if they haven’t had the nerve to oppose Trump openly. It will be interesting to see if this proves to be an anomaly or the beginning of a trend.

Let’s hope!

35 defections?! 35!! That’s remarkable, amazing really. Republicans can pretend this isn’t bipartisan all they want, nobody outside of their nutty base will believe them. Also, they just put the Senate on notice.

Looks like 35 Republican Reps decided that their personal re-election chances would be helped more by voting for this bill than against it.

Though it may not come to 10, there ought to be at least a few Republican Senators for whom the calculus is the same.

I wonder how much last night’s scene from NY AG Tish James’ office had to do with so many GOPers jumping ship?

I wonder how strong McConnell’s hold on the Senate Republicans is at this point… seems like if 15 percent of them decide to support the commission it’ll be a fight on his hands.

Oh! Oh! 35 House Republicans aren’t afraid of the truth.

Also, it looks like you might need to worry about what New York has found.

As the president who claimed to support law and order, you might not like it when law is applied to you, your family and the domestic terrorists who desecrated our nation’s Capitol.

I think the Republicans are onto something here. They want to study the protests and black lives matter. Ok, but let’s not tie it to the election. Let’s instead tie it to a commission on race equity. And I’m very happy to include protests in that. Let’s give them what they want, but on our terms…

This certainly must put some unwelcome, and unexpected, pressure on McConnell. I wonder if he’ll shade his position to match the mood. If he did, it wouldn’t be the first time hat he showed pragmatic “flexibility”.

McCarthy announced his opposition

We’re all taking a stand, Mr. McCarthy. Are you going to defend people who attacked our Capitol?

It’s tragic watching the GOP clinging to a such a loser. Under Trump they lost the House, Senate AND Presidency. They have had many chances to cut the ties but instead continue to tether themselves to the most divisive and incompetent president.

As their side bleeds voters, there is no upside for them to continue to pledge their fealty to this very damaged man.
