A watchdog group has accused Rep. George Santos (R-NY), who was arraigned at a Long Island federal courthouse on fraud charges this afternoon, of fabricating his campaign treasurer’s identity.
Santos represents a new twist on the Peter Principle: an amoral, petty grifter accustomed to successfully evading accountability has risen to his level of incompetence; bluff only takes you so far at this level.
Why are Repubs trying to distance themselves from Santos and not Trump?
Other then Santos not being a star and grabbing women by whatever, what is the difference?
“Given his struggles with the truth, much about Rep. Santos remains a mystery, but there’s no bigger mystery than his treasurer,” CREW President Noah Bookbinder said in a statement. “No one can seem to find Andrew Olson."
You’d think the FEC would be all over Santos’ scampaign. Unfortunately, the FEC doesn’t do a GD thing. Indeed, FEC may as well stand for Find Everything Copacetic.
Trump stole their base and branded it as his own. Santos is a pretender who has no pull with the base. He does, however, have a vote in the House, helping McCarthy hold onto his razor-thin majority, so House leadership is more likely to tolerate him than the Party at large.
They’re not trying to distance themselves from Santos except rhetorically. No R’s will take any action in the House to actually expel him. This is all for show. They need his vote in the House.
The main difference between Santos and Trump is that Santos doesn’t command a hardcore base of MAGA voters like Trump does, who will support a primary attack on any politician who crosses him. They’re scared of Trump. They’re not scared of Santos. They just need his vote.
