I live 2 blocks from a college campus. They are going online for the rest of the semester. The local economy is certain to suffer but it’s the smart move. Personally, I’m relieved because the campus, any campus is a vector for contagion.

Does anyone know how long after exposure one typically presents symptoms, and how long after exposure does one begin to be contagious, and for how long one remains contagious as the virus runs its course? I.e. can one be contagious before one presents symptoms?

But the approval process for laboratory-developed tests was proving onerous. New tests typically require validation — running the test on known positive samples from a patient or a copy of the virus genome. The F.D.A.’s process called for five. Obtaining such samples has been hard because most hospital labs have not seen coronavirus cases yet, said Dr. Karen Kaul, chair of the department of pathology and laboratory medicine at NorthShore University HealthSystem in Illinois.
The F.D.A. has disputed that it moved too slowly, saying that it provided emergency authorization for two laboratory-developed tests within 24 hours of a completed submission — one was the C.D.C.’s test and the other a test developed by New York’s Wadsworth laboratory after it had trouble verifying the C.D.C.’s test.
Incompetence at the highest levels. Sure they approved the non-CDC lab tests rapidly, but not after their application requirements caused weeks of delay. The FDA should have either been waving some of the upfront requirements or assisting labs in completing them faster (coordinating samples to get them to labs that haven’t seen coronavirus cases yet).
Competence matters. Leadership matters. And the lack of it from the Federal government is killing Americans.

Look up “San Antonio” and the quarantine. The city has been in battle with the government for some time over how it is handled.
One question I have is what is defined as a “case”. When I look at the WHO stats for example, do they mean people who have an active illness or are tested as having the virus in their system without or without symptoms as well.
Seriously true. And who is tested. I am still reconciling that fact that the numbers we have here are not even close to providing an idea of how it has spread.

Spreading misleading information, tampering with death counts, stopping medical procedures such as testing, purposely NOT getting tested and thus spreading the disease is a betrayal of Public Trust and Oath of Office…
In fact it is criminal for a government official to do these because it causes Americans to DIE!

The median time elapsed before symptoms appear is 5 days. They believe people are contagious while they are asymptomatic/pre-symptomatic, but there seem to be differing views on how contagious. Even though the most damage done from the virus is in the lower respiratory system, it also sheds from the upper respiratory system.
They have been getting some confusing test results when people seem to be over the virus and test negative (the one man even tested negative twice) and then test positive again subsequently. They’re still trying to figure that out.
