Sen. Raphael Warnock (D-GA) said on Tuesday that while the jury “got it right” when it rendered a guilty verdict against former police officer Derek Chauvin in the death of George Floyd, further action was needed to ensure that public policy grants equal protection under the law.
Columbus Interim Police Chief Michael Woods said that just after 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday, police received a 911 call from someone who reported that women were trying to stab them and then hung up. Dispatchers “were unable” to gather any information about what weapons were at the scene, he added.
Body-camera footage shows a White officer emerge from a vehicle as the victim appears to chase someone, who falls onto the sidewalk. The teen then turns toward someone else wearing a pink sweatsuit and takes a swing at her head. The officer fires four shots at the girl, leaving her sprawled next to a car in the driveway .
“She had a knife. She just ran at her,” one officer says on the footage.
Shoots a teenager 4 times because she “has a knife” when she’s in dispute with 2 others. As someone pointed on another thread why didn’t he use a taser. Tear these departments down and start again. There’s not one bad apple, it’s a culture and they know they can get away with it.
It needs to be emphasized that the grotesque amount of guns in this country is no small part of this, among other factors of course. Imagine if those imbeciles on 1/6 could have all brought their guns.
Warnock is absolutely right. A conviction is accountability for one case.
This conviction needs to be put in historical context. It’s a first for an officer of the law to be convicted for killing a black human being.
Centuries of police brutality & killings have gone unaccounted.
Very happy the feds are going to investigate systemic bias and unlawful policing patterns & practices in Minneapolis.
[Warnock] warned that the jury’s decision was not a “substitute” for the advancement of public policy measures
“George Floyd was murdered almost a year ago. There’s meaningful police reform legislation in his name,” [Biden] said. “But it shouldn’t take a whole year to get this done.”
Once again I’m struck by the speed with which the responding officer moved to leathal force. No appraisal of the situation, no attempt at descalation, just panicky gut reactions informed by the lizard brain’s basest impulses.
Perhaps we can add “count to ten before you do something you might regret” to the police training manual.
Just watched a little video against my better judgement. There were several cops there, how hard would it have been to them to start yelling at the teens then grab one of them. I just can’t believe within moments this is what they do. Person’s life is over and they don’t give a rip.
It’s not just diversity for the sake of being diverse. That man has knowledge and wisdom and experience, and he knows how to use all of those assets, combined for the common, public good. Yes, being black does give him many, many experiences that are foreign to white people, but that man is intelligent! Race has nothing to do with that. I like the way he thinks. More, please!
It is easy for us to simply say cops shoot first because they are all racist, but whether they are racist or not many times police officers are jumpy because of their training. They are constantly told that the public, especially black men, are dangerous. It is pounded into their heads that in every encounter with a black man, there is a real possibility that the person they encounter is going to draw a gun and kill them even in the most casual of traffic stops. That they are in constant danger is pounded into their brains day in and day out, in training and during pre-shift briefings. It shouldn’t be any surprise that they view black men as the enemy. That is the way they are trained. I think it is that training that has to change if we are ever going to get a handle on police using excessive force.
