The much ballyhooed and politically protected WAR ON DRUGS was always designed and implemented to be a WAR ON INDIVIDUALS (especially hippies and non-whites) and certainly not white-collar corporate scofflaws. Politics were key, too. Nelson Rockefeller, among others, needed it to seem tough on crime of the blue-collar variety. Reagan and Tip O’Neil needed it to show some legislative accomplishment in an off-year election. Results such as this WalMart case and the prior HSBC case (a fine paid by shareholders; no bosses went to jail; business kept whole) should surprise nobody.

Which is why you shouldn’t forget Common Cause in your giving plans – our one lever in this situation is the vote, but we need campaign finance reform to maintain it since the corporate takeover of the US government is almost complete.

Prosecute Walmart? No, no, says the DOJ, we can’t bite the hand that feeds us.

Just look at smarmy Steve Mnuchin today, grinning over yet another transfer of treasury funds to large corporations.

Fox is now telling us we should die to protect the corporations.

And most egregiously, Trump is the clown the corporations hired to entertain us while they dismantled the remaining regulatory functions of the government – and the clown is still at the wheel as we veer into the headlights of an oncoming pandemic.

Well…I would guess that a large percentage of Walmart shoppers are trumpers.
