As Khaya Himmelman and I have been documenting in The Franchise, this is a major concern for Democrats this fall and an issue that Trump administration officials have repeatedly refused to give a straight answer on. It’s against federal law for armed law enforcement officials to be present at polling places, but Trump and his allies have been flirting with the idea — whether it’s ICE agents, the National Guard, or FBI agents — for the better part of the past year.
I would guess the administration’s argument would be that members of the military are not “law enforcement personnel” … that is perhaps questionable with ICE Agents (FWIW, I think they are law enforcement) but definitely fails with FBI Agents…in my opinion.

If Trump declared a National Emergency, it would have a chilling effect on voting even it was blocked by our courts.
Separately, what should Neighborhood Associations be doing if they are near polling places?
Can they have tables outside the polling area and witnesses?
Wondering how much time Piss-Pot Pete spends looking in the mirror every day, practicing his tough-guy look.

1/3 of the votes in the 2024 election were by mail. Might be more this time. That’s just one of the problems he would have in suppressing the vote with a National Emergency. He could even end up suppressing the wrong votes, with the R’s thinking he had it in the bag and not bothering to vote. A risky move.

Just so you know, the Keans of NJ pronounce their name “Cane.” Former Gov. Kean, this guy’s father, was an oldtimie moderate-to-liberal Republican, the kind NJ used to have a lot of. The son’s family name and his problems with depression and what the Republican party has become, not to mention the weight he must feel to live up to the family name – well, too bad. I hope on a personal level he will do well. He’s not needed in Congress right now by New Jerseyans or the nation.
The story that catches my eye is the one about Cornell and the young woman whose civil suit has caught the attention of a the relevant prosecutor. I read about this case earlier today, probably in the NYT. Wherever I read it, it contained a link to the prosecutor’s unusual (to say the least) public statement about why his office didn’t pursue a criminal investigation earlier, and I read all of his many-paged statement. ABSOLUTELY NO REASON to undertake a criminal investigation when, at the time, the young woman recounted in detail all the sick sexual acts she’d participated in as voluntary, no laws broken.
I remain wondering why the record of her detailed account of the night in question exists at all. To whom did she give this account close to the time, and why? An account in which none of the men who had sex with her was a rapist? I mean, there is so much more to learn here.
