“Leaving it up to the states” was the gateway drug to get Roe struck down. Anyone who believes abortion is wrong wants a national ban, so that’s the next step.
It’s fun watching Trump try to thread the needle on this. He’s on record saying it should be up to the states. But during the primary he’s having to dance around this issue, hinting that he’d sign a national ban but not outright calling for it. Unless I missed it.

States, as in gerrymandered legislatures, not the unwashed masses who live there. The mere fact of being elected elevates the legislators to heights of intellect, wisdom and morality that the commoners cannot hope to match.

I really have no cause for pointing out spelling errors, as my spelling is atrocious, my typing, a collection of semi-random letters and my handwriting like a drunken spider fell in the inkwell and staggered across the page.

It would be richly ironic and deserved if legislators attempting to subvert the will of the people on this issue finally causes the hoi polloi to question how else their rights have been violated, and spurs them on to take further action. Probably too hopeful, I suppose.

True, but when even the guy who breaks practically every rail in politics - openly expresses his love and support for Putin, Xi, and Kim, dismisses and derides the Israeli prime minister while they’re at war, mocks American war heroes, etc. - treads very lightly on this issue, you know they’re meeting significant resistance and it’s a political loser.
Even some on SCOTUS saw this, which is why John Roberts desperately pled for a watered down version. I don’t think there are enough extremist Republicans to make this anymore than a Pyrrhic victory, especially on a national level.
