Election day state holiday, killing voter id, no-excuse required absentee voting, nice job, Virginia. Now about passing that national popular vote compact legislation…

Well, good for Gov Northam, and I’m so glad that he successfully fought off the ludicrous “yearbook blackface” allegations and refused to simply resign and slink away, as Democrats have grown accustomed to doing.

Now, my hope is that the GOP-side Virginians don’t decide to transfer their “Lee-Jackson” celebration to the new election day holiday by harassing and intimidating black voters… You know, just like the good old days.

It’s amazing how much a Democratic executive and legislature can accomplish for their state! Time to draw a contrast with the “do nothing, government as enemy” Republican Party. “If you really LIKE bad government, vote GOP!”

That’s just fine. Everyone know that what Yankees call “MLK Day” is actually Robert E Lee day.

“When someone tells you who they are, believe them.”

“They had things, levels of voting that if you ever agreed to it you’d never have a Republican elected in this country again,” Trump said.

Surprised that something called Lee-Jackson Day was actually still a thing in Virginia. I’m so glad to see the state ending it in favor of a holiday for Election Day! Yes, Virginia

Fine by me.

And the GOP has just lost Virginia. This should be the Dem blueprint for every Purple/Red state they win.

Wow, a double whammy for wingnuts: not only have they lost their slavery celebration holiday, but it’s been turned into a day that will increase voter turnout, not least for those who used to be enslaved.

That’s excellent.

Also:

No matter who you are or where you live in Virginia, your voice deserves to be heard. I’m proud to sign these bills into law.”

Oh noes! Look at this Marxist saying anyone can vote! More proof Commie Dems want illegals to do voter fraud crimes!

Glad to see Virginia moving into the 20th century. Please, anyone, correct me if I’m wrong about this but the USA is the only country I know of where the people defeated in a war got to build monuments to their cause and its heroes.

While I grew up in VA, I have to say this is something I don’t remember. Lived away for 40+ years and am back living here. Can’t quite relate to the state yet, but looks like Northam is on a roll in a very positive direction.

I moved to VA in in the late 90’s for grad school from the northeast.

My first reaction to Lee King Jackson Day was, WHAT???

Good work VA for abolishing that abomination of a holiday!

Agree that Northam and the state are heading in a much better direction. Welcome back! You picked the best time to return

In an odd way it takes a governor who as a college student once dressed in blackface to sign monumental legislation like this. Tell me again where the Lost Causers George Macaca Allen or Corey Stewart are today?

So, if Virginia can move a holiday to election day, can US the country move the federal veterans’ day holiday to election day? All it takes is legislation, no constitutional amendment fooforaw required.
