Van Hollen Insists ‘Time Has Come’ To Move Forward On Infrastructure Bill Without GOP | Talking Points Memo

Sen. Chris Van Hollen (D-MD) said Wednesday that Democrats should “move forward” with infrastructure legislation without Republican support, after an earlier effort at a bipartisan agreement fell apart earlier this week.

Schumer told reporters on Tuesday that Democrats are pursuing “a two-path approach.”

“It may well be that part of the bill that is passed will be bipartisan, and part of it will be in reconciliation,” he said. “But we’re not going to sacrifice bigness and boldness.”

Dead-curious about the back-room convos b/w WH and various senators.

What we get to know would get to Moscow McConnell, too.

Before the nation gets an infrastructure bill Joe Manchin will have to check with the guys down at the gas station and see if they think it’s really needed.

I’m waiting for the President to return to the US from his G-7 Conference and say enough is enough, and start the push to get the legislation passed one way or another. His time line is approaching, and the optics would look good.

That’s what I think. I’m maybe a cockeyed optimist, but I nevertheless believe WH & Senate leadership might just be playing this right.

This is good. I would love Dems to use “the mandate” word, and to affirm that Biden and Dems won by a huge majorities of American voters who want the country to move forward.

I heard Abrams’ Campaign Manager last night and she is aware of the position we are in. Her posture was reminiscent of the days of the George Floyd Protests.

And before that.

Both S1 and Infrastructure are popular with the vast majority of Americans. That is something the spin-merchants can play with only so much.

People will see the source of the obstacles to their well-being if they are leveled with…and the picture is getting more obvious with each passing day.

The question is: how is that desire for action allowed to penetrate the The Stone Wall of Inaction? We cannot continue to use language (including outdated metaphors) which do not address the needs of the General Population for.

(1) The Right To Vote
(2) Economic Recovery
(3) Aggressive Infrastructure work which is long overdue

The GOP will roll out their double-talk in their efforts to obstruct. But we need an Educated Electorate, which is easier to do than most people think.

A decided majority of citizens feel stricter gun laws are needed. Majorities believe a woman’s reproductive choices are between she and her doctor. Majorities feel the wealthiest individuals and companies do not pay their fair share of taxes. Majorities feel voting should be easier, not more difficult.

As you can see, what the majority wants doesn’t matter.

Sen. Van Hollen is right as was AOC yesterday when she said we are wasting precious time. It was right to talk to Repubs and get them to go public with their counterproposal. They did and it shows they’re not serious or sincere,

Good for him. The conversation always needs to point out that we have options that don’t include hoping that the GOP decides that governance is more important than obstruction. It might also be good to point out how many times the Patron Saint of Sore Losers dangled an infrastructure week and never produced a viable plan or a bill of any kind. Point out how long it has been since we’ve had a focus on infrastructure.

I was listening to an interview of Jeff Shesol’s book “Mercury Rising”, and as they discussed the space program all I could think of is that it wouldn’t fly now, in fact it would never have gotten off the ground.
I just wonder why Republicans insist that we can’t do bold new things anymore?

Because they’re retrograde, trolling assholes.

Speaking of retrograde, @steviedee111, the biggest Mercury retrograde of 2021 is May 29 - June 22.
Make a note of June 22 and beyond that…just because…

If and when we pass some useful legislation, it will be interesting to watch the “were you lying then or are you lying now?” effect as Repugs hop on board the credit train for things they opposed vehemently right up until they were passed.

They chased all the sane people out. Everett Dirksen worked with LBJ on the Civil Rights Law.

It has progressively gotten worse over the years. Obama’s Presidency sealed it (Obama’s words)

Eisenhower would have been hung if he were in Congress.

And I am quite positive you know this and more. I mention it because the GOP STILL utlilizes language, symbols, metaphors and norms of the PAST, while charting a guerrilla White Nationalist FUTURE…in the process fooling too many people that they are a Party that cares about anyone but their Base and those they can sucker into supporting them

Of course that’s subject to change if the U.S. Forest Service gets involved.
