As the country hits record-setting levels of vaccinations, the latest issue taken under the wing of the GOP culture wars appears to be so-called “vaccine passports.”
What if American Airlines requires proof of vaccination in order to board a plane? What will the Texas R’s say then? (I’m assuming airlines will eventually require that, but it remains to be seen)
“Government should not require any Texan to show proof of vaccination and reveal private healthinformation just to go about their daily lives." Abbott says.
NO ONE IS ASKING FOR PRIVATE HEALTH INFORMATION, THEY ARE ONLY ASKING ABOUT VACCINATION STATUS.
Maybe my memory is playing tricks on me, but the first time I traveled outside of the U.S., back in 1966, I seem to recall needing proof of a smallpox vaccination. No vaccination, and you stayed home. This is not some new “thing.”
ETA: Bingo. We need to go back to the “good old days” that the reactionaries keep telling us were mahvelous.
Of course, Fauci is completely correct on this. It’s not the Feds who want/need the proof obtained for a "passport’ so much as it’s the private sector that won’t take the chance of liability without it.
Dems should pass a law now making it a requirement to show proof of vaccination to travel interstate or internationally. I expect that as soon as Republicons gain power, they will make it a federal crime for companies to require proof of vaccination or pass a law protecting companies from suits if someone contracts the virus because they fail to demand proof of vaccination. Dems. should act now so that it becomes the norm.
Seriously, my cousin who refused to get the vaccine until her brother got really sick from COVID was throwing a fit on Easter Sunday over a vaccine passport
I didn’t get it. I kept saying you got the vaccine so what if you have to show the card to get into places?
No one is going to make me show ID! Why do I need to prove I got the vaccine?
Right?! It’s just something else to whine about. I’m 100% in favor of vaccine passports. I sincerely hope it’s something my governor is able to implement. Don’t wanna get vaccinated? That’s fine. Keep your ass at home.
This is just convenient political theater for the rubes. The Biden administration is “looking at” the idea but I believe a national passport is not going to happen, for good reasons.
For one thing, the current vaccines are being used under an emergency use authorization. They’re not yet tested and approved for all ages and for all conditions like pregnancy or people with severe allergies. Also, people in different socio-economic strata have different access to both the vaccines and to good information about them. A passport would privilege the wealthy over others.
I know some countries like Israel are going with this, but the US is a far larger and more diverse population. I’m sure we will get to a point where the FDA has approved the Covid vaccinations as part of the vaccination suite required for school enrollment, and critical employment like first responders and hospital staff. A national passport on the other hand, just isn’t practical.
Republican asshats like Abbott and DeSantis are jumping on this to give the rubes something to get angry about. It’s also fanning the flames of anti-vax sentiment, which is reprehensible.
I just found my old yellow health passports to prove I had been inoculated against yellow fever, malaria, diptheria, smallpox, etc.
how is proof of vaccination any more Orwellian than voting passports?
“Government should not require any Texan to show proof of vaccination and reveal private health information just to go about their daily lives,” Abbott said
Texas Minimum State Vaccine Requirements for Students Grades K-12
2020-2021 Immunization Requirements for Schools
A student shall show acceptable evidence of vaccination prior to entry, attendance, or transfer to a child-care facility or public or private elementary or secondary school in Texas.
Floridaman:
“Individual Covid-19 vaccination records are private health information and should not be shared by a mandate,” DeSantis’ executive order reads.
