Virginia’s Supreme Court on Thursday cleared the path for authorities to remove statues of two Confederate generals, in Charlottesville, Virginia, including one of Robert E. Lee that was at the center of a deadly white nationalist rally in 2017.

In their place they should erect statues of people of all races dismantling confederate monuments to, you know, own the racists.

Nice hair splitting by the Court.

It kind of strikes me as a subtle way of saying “up yours”.

I would like to go visit Monticello, especially since they now recognize Sally Hemings, but I would not stay in Charlottesville. So, no trip to Virginia. .

I want a statue of James Brown gettin’ down in every town square.

I live just outside Charlottesville and can’t wait for this to happen.

VA is definitely moving in a progressive direction, thanks to Democrats controlling the government. We shouldn’t blame the state for the actions of the white supremacists, it’s improving things which should be lauded.

There will be protests when the statues are actually removed, it could get violent again if the white supremacists decide to make a stand against, uh, freedom for all. Hopefully Charlottesville plans for it this time.

“Justice S. Bernard Goodwyn wrote in the court’s opinion on Thursday that the city was free to remove the statues which were erected in the 1920s because they predated the adoption of the 1997 law.”

The VA lege has a Dem majority in both houses, and the VA guv is a Dem.

Why don’t they simply repeal the 1997 law, and moot any need for judicial hair splitting?

Unless I’m missing something, that would seem the obvious (and righteous) thing to do.

It is past time we all recognize Confederacy and its soldiers for what they were, traitors.

They are taking away our votes in GA and TX, but we are taking away their stachues in VA…

I suppose this will fire up the ‘heritage’ argument again.

Bah. What country puts up monuments to traitors?

In Jackson park they should put up a statue of Jackson Brown and in Lee park they should put one up of Alvin Lee. That way they could keep the dead traitors names on the parks and be satisfied with that.
