VA Guv. Northam To Order Removal Of Robert E. Lee Monument In Richmond

Just wait until Trump is out of office to see the Conservatives ‘erase history’.

Context matters. To some, these statues glorify history, but many who see it that way are ignorant of the history of the statutes, when they were erected and why. Once that’s explained to them, many will have a different take on them. As for being part of history, yepper, they are fully a part of the segregationist south, which makes them ripe for museum, placed next to Benedict Arnold and other traitors to the nation.

Seriously, Thank God the Governor decided to hang on and ride it out after his apology for the party he attended in black-face while at University.

He said he was going to use his call-out and humiliation as a healing/teachable moment, and he has come through.

What heritage? They can celebrate their local and ethnic culture and history, but their only national heritage is that of being Americans. Anything else is just fantasy.

If it was true history Lee would be holding the white flag of surrender and I say that as a direct descendent of him

I used to feel indifferent bordering on irritated about the statue hostility, because it typified the kind of useless politics of symbolism that allow Democratic politicians to do absolutely nothing of substance. But now I think: arm the people with hammers, and let them smash down any piece of rightwing racist crap they can lay their hands on.

Excellent start.

I had a teachable moment of a sort myself over last weekend.
My sweetie’s step-sister and husband they live in NC. He’s a pilot for a major airline. Quiet as a churchmouse type. Never seen him angered. Never posts on Facebook (according to my better half). Went off on FB. I mean BOOM! over vandalism and potential removal of memorials.

Granted we are in stressful times.
But this might have been the last trigger I’d have ever expected would set him off.
Call me educated.

Unlike the US at the end of Reconstruction, the Germans didn’t let the bastards back into power.

The American Civil War museum in Richmond would seem to be the place to put it. And others.

Lincoln should have hung every officer and every CSA official.

They got off way too easy.

Long overdue but welcome nevertheless.

The only appropriate statue of Lee (if there has to be one) is in the chapel at Washington & Lee University. Laid out on his back on a slab of marble. Dead.

It’s a good look for him.

And right on cue on local radio in Richmond, Virginia a racist talk show host (who gets his news to relay to his audience from the white supremacist Virginia Citizens Defense League militia group) refers to Northam as the “Virginia Taliban”.

Until Trump, the “erasing history” defense has always been phony. But because Trump either cannot or does not read, now it’s quite real.

This thing was put up in 1890, and most of the similar monuments were in fact raised between 1890 and the 1950s, coincident with Jim Crow repression. The ones just after the war were mostly commemorations of the dead, not glorifications of their “heritage.” Off the horse, Bob. It’s over. You lost.

For the record, Northam can remove the Lee statue because it is state-owned. The other Confederate monuments in Richmond are city-owned. The mayor and a councilman have announced they will propose removing those too to the city council.
