A D.C. federal court judge called out Republican lawmakers who have downplayed the violence of the deadly Capitol insurrection on Jan. 6 while handing out the first sentence for a rioter involved in the attack.
Without mentioning names, Lamberth took aim at the “utter nonsense” that some Republican lawmakers and right-wing figures have pushed in the aftermath of the deadly Capitol insurrection.
I can name names, as can the law once all this shakes out.
I suppose it’s so much the better if it makes his statement more credible in Wingnutistan, perhaps even generates a little cognitive dissonance and uncertainty.
One way or another, reasonable folks of all stripes gotta push back against this self-serving bullshit.
How long before Tucker and the other a-holes in the Right Wing media attack the judge for being a liberal sympathizer that should be removed from the bench immediately before he irrevocably harms the nation with his attitude. TOTALLY unprofessional statements, blah, blah, blah. Should be removed immediately!
Thank G-d for people like him not afraid to call it out (as apparently so many others appear to be).
Seems like justice…many of those who went into the Capitol were “ride alongs” who just wandered in, looked around, and left. Yes, they did the wrong thing, but they also didn’t do anything violent, and at least some didn’t realize that they weren’t allowed in. If they admit guilt, and actually learn a lesson from it, then a fine and probation seems like the right punishment…and maybe also gets them out talking to true believers about how wrong the whole thing was.
It’s also heartening to hear a Republican appointed judge making this kind of statement…we need the entire judiciary to stand up against what happened and punish these people, especially the ones like the two guilty please who actually were there to foment violence and insurrection. This is all a good sign of a functioning judicial system…we’ll see what happens when a Trump judge gets one of these cases.
Well, that’s hopeful. So now those same complainers about him being a liberal judge can get that stuff shut down real quick. This is gonna be fun to watch heads explode, maybe…
But I agree with you - if it can be documented that, heck, some of these folks left the premises the moment things got out of hand, they shouldn’t be prosecuted or given heavy handed sentences. This one was of that category.
Now, hopefully, the defendant is smart enough not to show up at the next insurrection event in August.
It’s all fun and games and false bravado until they land in federal court and come face to face with the consequences of their actions. Then it’s apologize profusely, plea bargain, or turn state’s evidence for most of these folk.
They’re very lucky the same Constitution they tried to overturn at Trump’s urging still protects them.
@sniffit. Sorry, I didn’t mean to direct my post towards yours. Don’t know how I did that.
If he didn’t want to create that impression, he should have given her some jail time.
No one innocently or unintentionally trespassed on the US Capitol that day. If you crossed that boundary on Jan 6th, the minimum should be some jail time.
(Shakes fist) I just spent like five minutes trying to figure that out. No Mercy, No Quarter, right? If so, totally agree. I have no problem with this dumbass being let off with probation because it really does sound like she’s just an idiot who just followed along with the rest of the crowd.
attempt to overthrow the government, even lightly, lose the right to participate in choosing the government (loss of the right to vote)
they were trying to eliminate the votes of others, the cost should be to lose the right to participate in that manner - seems like a just consequence to me
