A growing number of Republican officials are expressing their concerns about how recent changes at the U.S. Postal Service could hamper vote by mail, with a Republican attorney general from a swing state the latest to call for the changes to be delayed until after the election.
Here is my letter to the USPS board, sent yesterday:
Sir:
Last week, CNN reported: “President Donald Trump said Thursday that he opposes much-needed funding for the United States Postal Service because he doesn’t want to see it used for mail-in voting this November.”
I’m appalled, although not surprised, that Trump openly declared that he was sabotaging the U.S. Postal Service to benefit his re-election. This is of a piece with so many other actions he has taken that benefit him while damaging our country.
The U.S. Postal Service is a 245-year-old American institution, the nation’s third largest civilian employer and a lifeline to millions -delivering paychecks, medications, Christmas gifts – and yes, ballots. If you think the American people will sit idly by as you and the rest of the board try to destroy it, you have sorely underestimated your fellow citizens.
We will fight you. And we will defeat you. Obstructing the U.S. mail is a crime.
And we will remind you, sir, that Trump will eventually leave public office, but your reputation will linger on. Think Vichy government. Think Nixon’s henchmen. Think Alberto Gonzales. What will be left of your personal and business reputation after Trump is gone? Will it survive Trump? Our first Postmaster General Benjamin Franklin is remembered as a creative, intelligent American patriot. How will you be remembered?
We urge you to return the sorting machines, the postboxes, and stop aiding Postmaster Louis DeJoy’s destruction of this vital service.
Or stated in English: The Post Office sabotage is so obvious that we can’t lie our way out of it - soooo, we need to pretend to give a damn about the country.
" Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost, whose letter to President Trump was first reported by CBS, is one of several Republican officials who have raised concerns about the apparent delays in mail delivery due to new policies implemented by a Trump-aligned postmaster general."
He’s really not taking Trump’s interests to heart. Which unfortunately is the most important thing in the current Republican Party. Trump ain’t going to take this lying down, this guy is in for some abuse.
Republicans should be concerned that we’re about 78 days from the election, with many Republicans in swing states behind in the polling, and the entire country is hyper-focused on an issue that’s devastating to them.
There’s no good argument to make to the American people defending defunding or slowing down the mail. And they know it. In case anyone is not paying attention, Speaker Pelosi is going to take care of that.
It will be interesting to see how this works out in the Senate races…Cornyn isn’t really in a strong place, and the mail is pretty damn important in Texas, so him defending delays and interference won’t go over well. I think most Texans still consider themselves honorable and think you should win fair and square, any weaseling doesn’t sit well with them, and it just may overwhelm the Republican bias they have, especially since Hegar is a really good fit for the state. Same could be said for Montana, and it’s instructive that Collins jumped right on this one, she’s going to be a seriously large weather vane all election season as she tries to scrape up a win (regardless of her reputation).
Monday, DeJoy will be in the hot seat in front of will be in the hot seat Monday before a House Committee. What are the odds he says he has been ordered to not answer questions?
Let us not leave out that among these policies is the decision to treat ballots as bulk rate pieces unless the local counties pay first class, costing local election boards, counties, and states millions.
Yeah, that’s the crazy thing. The young and healthy may not prefer it, but are still probably willing to risk in-person voting. Elderly and rural voters are more likely to not vote if they can’t by mail.
Like the next COVID aid package, Trump is taking the position that hurts him politically for no apparent reason.
