I think the ‘freedom’ Ron (and the House Freedom Kaukus) are talking about is the freedom to impose your views on others,
Not very free when you’re on the receiving end; but, it wouldn’t surprise me to learn they get by that with their mountain of grievances (“Not very ‘freeing’ what you did to me, either, was it?”)

Immediately after the Civil War and the ending of slavery / passage of the 13th Amendment, American racists and bigots were scrambling to make new restirctions and laws to protect their white, Xian authority and government. The roots of Jim Crow laws began as early as 1865
Under Andrew Johnson’s Reconstruction policies, with the support of the Democratic Party, nearly all the southern states would enact their own “Black Codes” in 1865 and 1866. While the codes granted certain freedoms to African Americans—including the right to buy and own property, marry, make contracts and testify in court (only in cases involving people of their own race)—their primary purpose was to restrict Black peoples’ labor and activity.
Some states limited the type of property that Black people could own, while virtually all the former Confederate states passed strict vagrancy and labor contract laws, as well as so-called “anti-enticement” measures designed to punish anyone who offered higher wages to a Black laborer already under contract.
Black people who broke labor contracts were subject to arrest, beating and forced labor, and apprenticeship laws forced many minors (either orphans or those whose parents were deemed unable to support them by a judge) into unpaid labor for white planters.
Passed by a political system in which Black people effectively had no voice, the black codes were enforced by all-white police and state militia forces—often made up of Confederate veterans of the Civil War—across the South.
Violence was on the rise, making danger a regular aspect of African American life. Black schools were vandalized and destroyed, and bands of violent white people attacked, tortured and lynched Black citizens in the night. Families were attacked and forced off their land all across the South.
The most ruthless organization of the Jim Crow era, the Ku Klux Klan, was born in 1865 in Pulaski, Tennessee, as a private club for Confederate veterans. While the Klan has lost a lot of its members, it still exists, and has at least 13 centers of activity in the U.S.
Racist, anti-semitic, White Protestant and Xian zealots will never stop fighting the Civil War, or the wider Race and Religion War. Until they are defeated and dead. We need to make this happen (the defeated part,) until they are truly history.

Has anybody else noticed that twitter commenters are getting more vile, racist, misogynistic and generally boorish across the board? AOC’s is a hot mess of vile, but even Centrist, Norm Ornstein has more than his share. I’ve head that Musk’s policies have removed filters for this sort of thing.

I think that is a correct observation. It will obviously take longer with humans due to our massive infrastructure, technology and population but there are outside forces at play and the threats to our survival continue to accrue, so who knows. There are unknown, unknowns lurking about that have yet to appear on our radar as well. We don’t know what consequences await us.

I never realized how much British fiction I read as a kid until I had to explain the Dr. Who, Monty Python, and even some Benny Hill references.
My gateway into British fiction was Agatha Christie. And to think this all started because my town’s public library thought the Hardy Boys and Nancy Drew mysteries were not good literature.

I keep hearing from millenials from time to time that boomers ruined everything and only they have the answers to climate problems - they’re just waiting for the boomers to die off. I want to show them the Time magazines I kept from the 80s that were devoted to solutions for ecological balance and sustainability that would prevent climate catastrophe by the 2000s. I think the latest generations forget that the scions of the 1% are just as selfish and hell bent for the rest of the money and power as their boomer forefathers were.

I wasn’t making a judgment - there are clearly too many humans on the loose. I was observing the current situation in various locations in relation to my stated hypothesis which is that we may have inadvertently stepped over the limit for human numbers and find ourselves on the downward slide population-wise.

I swear this whole anti-abortion movement is not just a religious reaction against “murder”, but a way to increase the population so as to make labor cheaper, and pit ourselves against ourselves.
