The US has offshored 20-30% of its carbon emissions to China, which it then imports mostly as embedded emissions in goods from China. In this race of the kettle to call the pot black, the US has to concede it is a driver of the fact that China is the world’s largest carbon emitter. The sad truth is that Trump has given China freedom to pollute by abandoning multilateral and bilateral work on lowering emissions. Indeed, now it is difficult for American firms even to invest in joint ventures with Chinese countries on green technology because China has declared them strategic. I look at the smoke-filled sky here in Eastern California, I lament the loss of pollinators and most other insect population, I feel for the few birds displaced by the fires like the disoriented LeConte’s Thrasher I saw in our garden this morning, and I don’t know why people think that 130 degrees in Death Valley is in any way normal. The climate is at Defcon 1, and we have a political party focused on imaginary enemies.

Probably every country in the world prefers Biden to Trump, except Russia and perhaps Israel (not even sure about the latter). As do about 55% of Americans.
