Uber, the company that allows customers to hail private drivers from its smartphone app, on Monday announced it was expanding its service to allow users to hail cabs, not just “black cars,” in Washington, D.C. The move comes after the D.C. Council voted unanimously in early December to implement an amendment to update taxicab regulations from the 1980s to expressly allow companies such as Uber to operate in the District, following a PR and regulatory battle between Uber and the D.C. Taxicab Commission.
