Two People Died From COVID-19 In CA Before What Was Believed To Be First Death In US | Talking Points Memo

Public health officials in Santa Clara County, California, announced on Tuesday that two individuals had died from COVID-19 earlier than what was previously believed to be the first death of a COVID-19 patient.

It would be nice if they shared more information about these deceased individuals. Did they travel? Any relatives or friends infected? Do they have any idea of the source of their infection? Ages?

If you think the US has gone as low as possible related to the virus and now deporting sick immigrants, think again.

News is reporting that neither had any travel history and that the assumption is that both are examples of community spread.

They may be sick, but we’re sicker.

A friend of mine’s brothers were in China in Dec for work. Both came back to CA sick. They recovered, but, who would have known to look out for Covid then?

Exactly. Being the home of Silicon Valley there is a regular travel between here and China. Most of us in the county all now can point to people we know or work with who were weirdly sick in December and January, but of course were never tested for COVID-19.

Oh Donnie. You’ll wear your fish lips out lying this one to death.

Can they still be tested for antibodies to the virus?

Added: Unfortunately, if community spread was happening in December, Trump can claim no one knew. Not my fault. Nothing I could’ve done.

He is going to play that card no matter what any actual facts are…

I don’t know. I’ve been meaning to email my friend and will ask if they’ve been tested. They could have had the flu, but no one was thinking of COVID then. It had to come from somewhere, it didn’t just show up at a nursing home.

Sorry, that dog won’t hunt for him or the regime. COVID-19 was understood to be a “problem” (not widespread, though) in January. The regime could have had a response by January. If anything, it makes them look worse (if that’s possible).

Yes, there were calls for “social distancing” by the third week of January. Experts in DC were speaking out. But even a month later, not everyone was paying attention.

Sad to say but these kinds of reports ought to be expected. There will be many adjustments to the numbers…of infected, of fatalities…as more and more information becomes available.

Sure, they could and should be tested for antibodies. A negative could just mean that the response waned with time, but a positive would be very important information.

Trump makes a big deal about his travel ban from China at the end of January saving American lives. While I don’t necessarily think it was a bad idea, it came too late and there were 40,000 people who came after it went into effect anyway. And most of the New York cases came from Europe, primarily Italy. So, realistically it saved 0 American lives. On the other hand, testing would have saved lives, as would having PPEs.

Since it’s in every country on earth, the efficacy of travel bans unless they are done immediately when the virus emerges is doubtful.
