BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) — Two Buffalo police officers were charged with assault Saturday, prosecutors said, after a video showed them shoving a 75-year-old protester in recent demonstrations over the death of George Floyd in Minnesota.
That protester, it turns out, was a longtime follower of Dorothy Day and the Catholic Worker movement. He was a veteran of many protests, since injustice and violence seem to be constants in the modern nation state. I am sure the assault did not surprise him, but what an irony…having violence done to you as you are advocating for peace and justice…
“But dozens of Buffalo police officers who were angered over their fellow officers’ suspensions stepped down from the department’s crowd control unit Friday.”
Shame – shame on them all!
More than a dozen of them witnessed the assault without offering any aid to a severely-injured septuagenarian bleeding out in front of them.
Whom were they “serving”? Whom were they “protecting”?
Every single one of them should spend the rest of their careers as meter maids, or on canine-scoop patrol – if not charged, themselves, as accessories after the fact.
This is what can happen when you start shoving people around like a tough guy. When I was a kid two guys got in an argument in a bar in my hometown, they step outside, one hits the other who falls backward, hits his head, and dies. So suddenly you’re not just a loudmouth any more, you’re a defendant in a homicide. I hope this man recovers but he may not. It’s different from TV, you dumb bastards.
I hope that the 57 officers have their resignations duly noted in their service records. The resignation can then be discussed at every promotion review board.
57 officers resigned from the crowd control unit in protest of the suspensions? That’s 57 officers who chose to back unnecessary violent abuse instead of due process. Fire them all immediately. They’re the bad cops, every single one. They’re who we need to get rid of.
I’m smiling just a little because a cop gave me a ticket a long time ago and I thought OK, I report on your municipality and if I ever report something negative about you I’ll just be doing my job too, fucko. And years later I got to report that he was suspended and discharged for conduct unbecoming an officer. I didn’t do it vindictively, he wasn’t a bad guy really, and my unconfirmed understanding of what he did was that it was sort of more bad judgment than anything. But sometimes, all you Officer Friendlies, you get your own selves in trouble and it’s just too bad. Like I’ve said, the way to prove that you’re mostly good guys is not to literally crack heads on camera. It creates more problems than it solves, you goddamn thugs.
That probably explains the aggressive cop coming and shoving the only one of the bunch who showed the least bit of concern about the old man on the ground. You can almost hear him saying “leave that f-ing asshole where he is…”
If we can just hold on a few more months Trump’s actions are going to result in a wave election that sweeps him and his ilk into the septic tank of history. I want to particularly encourage the police to continue to beat up old white guys. That’s really gonna help build the wave.
