I am having a hard time grasping that the Trump campaign did not game this all out to begin with. The possibility has been there for some time. The debate performance and subsequent firestorm would have been reason to have a plan B whether the issues were real or not.

Oddly enough, I think a debate with Trump is highly overrated.
It is impossible to really debate someone that vomits out a torrent of lies. On the other hand, it might provide a side by side of both candidates, one younger and the other older. This later point is what Donald Trump wants to avoid I suspect.

I read an article or two last week indicating that they were doing fresh oppo research on Harris after the debate, and as the talk intensified about Biden stepping aside.
So they weren’t caught completely flat-footed. You can hear some of it in calling her Biden’s “Immigration Czar” and so on. Most of the howls mentioned here are just performative outrage to energize the MAGA base that hasn’t been paying attention to the drama on the Democratic side.
