President Donald Trump on Thursday night pledged to have law enforcement monitor polling sites on Election Day, dialing up his bogus claims of election fraud to another extreme.
It is my understanding that in a number of states including Florida, it is against the law for law enforcement officers to be present within a polling place unless called there by election officials due to a crime being committed against voters or officials.
Pretty hard to prove a crime when there is no crime to prove.
Keep it up, Donnie! At this rate, you’ll have us pissed off enough to get 80% turnout. (I wanted to leave some room for him to depress his own turnout.)
As another poster said: We’ll crawl over broken glass and a COVID river to vote for Biden.
Does he really think the American people are going to be intimidated by his tactics. Somebody needs to tell him the truth. This isn’t 1960 and he isn’t Bull Conner.
Like many media outlets, TPM snapped like a salmon at Trump’s bait. Rather than highlighting Biden’s speech and the DNC, it ran Trump’s distraction at the top of the site.
Trump always does this. He says something to steal back the limelight. It’s usually outrageous, like his illegal assertion here that law enforcement can be imposed by him at polling places.
I’m trying to get an idea of how many polling places there are that would require “sheriffs and law enforcement and hopefully US Attorneys and…everybody. And Attorney Generals.” So far my definitive answer is “a lot.”
Trump is a cornered rat who knows outside the Oval Office lies prison. He’s shown no compunction about using violence against peaceful protesters exercising their constitutional rights; perhaps we should not gamble the future of our democracy and assume he will not exercise even more authoritarianism in his most desperate moment.
Dems could neutralize this by doing everything to dislodge the illegal Chad from his seat, which is their duty in any case.
They won’t be there to make sure that actual voter fraud isn’t committed or attempted, of course. They’ll be there to intimidate and scare away would-be legitimate voters who for one reason or another have reason to fear law enforcement, because they’ve had or have issues with the law for totally unrelated reasons like unpaid parking tickets or back taxes owed, because someone in their family overstayed their visa, or, most likely, because they’re dark-skinned or look Muslim or “radical” or are on some list and they fear being interrogated or even detained (illegally but possession of a gun and badge is 9/10th’s of the law) for alleged criminal activities or “protesting”.
It’s GOING to happen, because cops, being overwhelmingly stupid white racist apes, LOVE Trump, perhaps more than any other group, the only question being how extensive and effective it’ll be. Trump has finally realized that there’s no one who actually, physically, literally stands in his way, and that any opposition to his crimes mostly consists of words and “laws”. How far he’s willing and able to take this “might makes right” principle is anyone’s guess. But if he can prevent millions of Dem voters from voting, or having their votes be counted, he absolutely will do it, or try to do it. It’s literally the only way he can win, and considering his ego, and what will almost certainly happen to him if he loses, he has every reason to go all out and do this, or at least try to.
That much-anticipated “constitutional crisis” is finally coming, in the form of massive election tampering by Trump and his minions. They’re going to try to use backhanded methods and thuggish tactics, most massively illegal, to steal it, and dare anyone to do anything about it. If he has the backing, from cops, the military and judges, there’s literally nothing we can do about it. The “law” is whatever you make of it, and paper laws don’t self-enforce. His incentive to steal it is HUGE, which is what most scares me.
Classic bitch intimidation move 99.
I’ve done poll watching. There are rules that law enforcement must follow on site so this shouldn’t be an issue. There are also poll watchers from both parties on site. My job one election was to watch the republican poll watcher who was bird dogging one of the elderly female who was checking in people as they presented their ID’s. Primary rule for poll watchers, NEVER touch the check in polling book-EVER. If there was a challenge you had to make it clear to the volunteer that you are challenging a specific person and why. This guy thought he was slick. He would try and touch the book with his fingernail and claim the woman was old and could see whose name he was pointing at so he ha a reason to get that close. He was only doing this to Black males. So my cousin comes in to vote, he gets challenged by this guy saying his ID is fraudulent. I step in and say I vouch for him he’s my cousin The guy looks at me and I ask him are you going to say I’m fraudulent. He just stares so I tell him I’ve kept count, you’ve only challenged Black males and I see what you’re doing. At this point I inform the lawyer on site from the Dem party who questions the guy with the Repug lawyer, argument occurs and I look up from the table and the guy is going out the door.
Republican poll watchers are not there to just watch, they are there to actively challenge the votes of people they think they can intimidate. A lot of people voting in 2016 were confronted with by gun nuts sitting outside polling places, outside the legal boundaries with their weapons in their hands telling people they better not vote for Clinton. tRump is nothing more than a . gangster
